The Indoor Aquatic Center at 4706 Overland Drive will close for two weeks starting Sunday for annual maintenance. Work includes rebuilding pumps and motors heating and ventilation, repainting features and deep cleaning of tiles carpet and concrete. The Outdoor Aquatic Center at 727 Kent will be open daily 1 p.m. to 8 45 p.m. during the indoor closure.
The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission again rejects a 219 acre housing project between Lone Star and Clinton lakes. Developers argued a 30 acre man made lake would ease flooding up to 1.3 feet. lawyers admit benefit may be closer to six inches. Final Douglas County Commission hearing not yet scheduled.
Five Veritas Christian School students earned writing honors in a regional ACSI competition. Emilie Nikodym and Elizabeth Bartlow received superior ratings for free verse poems, with Bartlow also earning superior for a short story. Aileen Doll earned superior for an essay narrative, Mark Randtke good for rhymed poetry, and Michael Penny excellent for a short story.
