London reports ten enemy bombers destroyed and several British planes missing as RAF and German raids intensify over the Isles. King George VI narrowly escapes harm in southern England while waves of bombers attack German targets and coastal defenses.
Washington officials told the Senate Military Committee that a compulsory training bill could yield 930,000 men in training by October 1 and 1,415,000 by April next year, with initial costs of about 1.0 billion dollars and annual costs thereafter. The plan envisions a 1.2 million mobilization force, combining army guard and conscripts, while the Navy details expansion to 170,000 by January and training upgrades. Washington July 12 The national conference of state AAA committeemen backed continuing federal production limits for major crops into 1941 citing Europe’s wartime trade gaps. Leaders said policy should mirror 1940 with cotton tobacco corn and wheat plantings reduced and subsidies around 750 million dollars. If foreign demand improves next fall the limits could be eased to raise output.

Boston report says a British shore battery in Port of Spain Trinidad fired a shell across the bow of the American freighter Flying Fish as it entered port on July 5 at 6 38 p m. Captain Wollaston refused to comment while crew members described the incident and said the ship was halted by a British patrol and given clearance to proceed after signaling.
