Berlin reports six weeks to July 8 saw 609000 tons of enemy shipping sunk by submarines, a rate rivaling the 1917 unrestricted campaign. German sources say submarines average over 100000 tons weekly, with air attack largely absent this war.
Pi-R. S. Hud son, minister of agriculture, told commons Britain faced a crisis immeasurably more serious than in 1914 and that food production must rise in the next year or millions will go hungry. He warned Britain would continue to eat despite German blockade efforts.
The Admiralty released a statement denying an Italian report that bomb hits damaged Hood and Ark Royal. It says no direct hits or casualties occurred, while British forces claimed four enemy aircraft destroyed and seven damaged in the action.
Secretary Ickes, a third term advocate, said at the White House that he had no doubt President Roosevelt would accept renomination. He added Roosevelt had not stated his stance and the remark reflected Ickes own opinion.

The Evening Bulletin reports three or four workers at the Frankford arsenal were discharged for proven subversive activities. The arsenal manufactures shells and ammunition for the army and other military needs.
Federal Judge Richard Hopkins signed an order settling Douglas county claims against the Kansas City Kaw Valley and Western railroad. The agreement provides immediate payments and a total of 1 213 24 including bridge rentals and 1939 taxes, plus a 25 percent pre-trust salary compromise in cash and stock. Trustees of the railroad confer with county officials on broader compromise and possible transfer of property to a reorganized company.

On June 24, opening day of the Republican national convention, a crude time bomb was found in a central city building. Lt. Albert A. Granitz and six detectives raided the Workers School, described as Communist operated, and arrested two men on charges of sedition and possession of bombs with bail set at $3,500 each.

Rome reports 220 Italian and Albanian officers and men died when the Italian motorship Paganini burned and sank June 28 off Durazzo Albania. A casualty list led by Marshal Italo Balbo shows 75 missing. The cause of the Paganini fire is not given.

A 3.16 inch downpour in under two hours swelled streets and basements in Leavenworth with Three Mile Creek flooding Cherokee Street and Nine Mile Creek four miles south. Fort Leavenworth summer campers kept tents steady as surface water and wind flooded basements and streets. Atchison also saw 3.9 inches of rain with curb deep water and corn knocked down, including flooding at the Atchison Globe basement.
