British air defenses claim twelve German planes shot down with one British loss. Germany bombed Emden Kiel and the Rhineland while Britain mobilizes 300,000 to register, bringing total called to over 3.3 million. blockade attempts fail with minor shipping damage.
Berlin reports fresh successes in the starvation blockade against England with claims of valuable cargo seizures and air blows on British steamers in the English channel. It is announced that 40,000 tons of British shipping were damaged by the air force yesterday and 24,674 tons of enemy cargo space were sunk.
Grenoble reports the Petain government will detach the franc from the pound and peg it to the American dollar. A Vichy dispatch says the rate is not yet announced but the franc could be set around 43.30 per dollar, replacing the former 1 pound equals 17654 francs.
The stock market index for 60 stocks opened with 41 advances and 19 declines after yesterday's session, indicating a modest upturn with broad participation. Investors weighed mixed earnings reports and macro data amid cautious optimism.
Paul V. McNutt federal security administrator in Chicago today predicted President Roosevelt would accept a third term nomination. He told reporters at his ball room headquarters that the nomination seems to be in the stars and that the President will be nominated and will accept. He indicated no decision on the vice presidential nomination and said his own name would not be presented if the President’s is.
Rome reports renewed Italian bombing of Malta aimed at destroying the vital Mediterranean base. Italians claim hits on two British cruisers and a battleship during a week of action, with an Italian destroyer sunk. Italy also says losses include two destroyers and a submarine.
The U S liner Washington arrived from Galway Ireland with 1410 passengers including 273 aliens. The trip was uneventful unlike the last when she was hailed by a German submarine. Among passengers were children under 10 including the nine year old son of Alfred Duff Cooner and the 10 month old son of Ernest Simpson.
Cairo dispatch reports a small British garrison at Moyale in the Kenya Ethiopan frontier area holding all positions against an Italian assault. The British HQ said the besieged force inflicted heavy losses on attackers while Italian commands claimed occupation of a fortified village near Moyale. In the western desert two Italian columns near Fort Capuzzo were engaged again.
Coastal batteries and anti aircraft guns repelled Italian planes near Alexandria Egypt today. The air raid alarm lasted only a few minutes.
Colorado Springs July 13 Wendell Willkie spoke by telephone with Rep. Joseph Martin about campaign plans and a possible formal address in Elwood Indiana He said he would wait for the Democratic convention in Chicago before deciding. He praised his Denver reception and outlined a three point platform stressing unity defense and a strong economy.
Havana reports Cuba will stage a presidential election with western hemisphere defense at issue. Col Fulgencio Batista leads seven parties and pledges cooperation with the United States. Principal opponent Dr Ramon Grau San Martin stays quiet under a Cuba for the Cubans platform. A third candidate, Reinaldo Marquez Camacho, is described as a dark horse.
President Roosevelt sails on the weekend cruise with trusted aide Justice Samuel I Rosenman of the New York Supreme Court aboard the ship. Also on board are Rear Admiral Ross T McIntire Miss Marguerite LeHand and Mr and Mrs E Bartlett Jr.

Chicago July 18 James A Farley refused to say if he would remain Democratic national chair or seek the president nomination. He urged a convention roll call and predicted a Thursday nomination with a Friday VP pick. Farley spoke with Hopkins Byrnes Walker Wheeler and Flynn and teased Farley delegate support.

Anne McDonnell twenty, Henry Ford II twenty two, wed at the Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Monsignor Fulton J. Topeka July 13 Charles D McKnaught Topeka's suspended police chief will testify in his own behalf Tuesday at resumption of the ouster hearing brought by Attorney General Parker before Commissioner Fred M Harris. The hearing was recessed last night until Tuesday acting chief E W Kaul testified McKnaught showed more interest and cooperation than nine chiefs Kaul had served under Lieutenant Ernest E Sailer testified McKnaught told subordinates to run the department for the benefit of the people to run an honest efficient department.
