Window smashed at Aladdin Cafe downtown Lawrence

A front window at Aladdin Cafe 1021 Massachusetts St. was broken overnight. Police have not identified a suspect or shown surveillance footage. The window was repaired before Thursday morning and damage is estimated at 1200 dollars. Call Crime Stoppers with tips.

Man charged with sexually assaulting two on Jan. 17

Brett L. Logan, 40, of Lawrence, was charged in Douglas County District Court with one count of aggravated sexual battery and one count of sexual battery for alleged assaults on two different 30-something victims on or about January 17. The incidents were reported around 10 p.m. in the 3600 block of East 25th Street. Logan, listed as transient, was booked into jail Monday. a court hearing was held Thursday.

Free State Film Festival draws 2 500 to 3 000 attendees

Marlo Angell the artistic director says the six day event exceeded expectations despite scaled back funding and sponsorship uncertainty, with roughly 2 500 to 3 000 festivalgoers this year down from 12 000 in 2016. The festival was trimmed after a $60,000 city grant loss and funding caps. Angell also serves as director of new media at the Lawrence Arts Center.

Kobach appeals fine to district judge

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has appealed a $1,000 fine for misleading the court. He filed late Wednesday after U S Magistrate Judge James O Hara refused to reconsider the penalty and deposition order. The case concerns misrepresentation of documents from a November meeting with then President elect Donald Trump and a draft National Voter Registration amendment. Pauls loses bid for reelection and Patsy Terrell dies

Former representative Pauls failed to win re election last November as Patsy Terrell died near the end of her first legislative session.
