Lawrence city budget writers discovered about 1.4 million dollars in unanticipated revenue driven by a 2017 real estate boom. City officials say they will use the windfall to avert further tax cuts and fund services while proposing a 1.25 mill increase, roughly 25 dollars annually for a 175 thousand dollar home.
Topeka attorneys in the long running school finance lawsuit filed final written arguments to the Kansas Supreme Court. They debate whether lawmakers additional funding for public schools this year is constitutional and if the August opening can proceed without a special session. The case centers on a per pupil funding formula reinstated in June and the $194.7 million increase for the coming year plus $97.8 million in the following year. Gov. Sam Brownback signed the bill on June 15.
