The Kansas River levee trail along the Turnpike is clear and back to normal after crews rebuilt bridges and piers during Turnpike bridge work. Rex Fleming, the project engineer, said the levee is straighter and accessible to runners walkers bikers and other recreation seekers after years of intermittent closures. Douglas County Route 9 near North Lawrence is back open after seven months of closure for Kansas Turnpike Authority bridge work. The $130 million project, replacing larger Kansas River bridges, restored a half mile of East 1500 Road and added a smooth surface. County engineer Terese Gorman said traffic returns to about 650 daily riders and local residents will be glad the road is in good shape again.
Douglas County deputies used a Taser to subdue a 48-year-old rural Lawrence man after he refused to leave a residence near East 1350 Road. He was booked on multiple charges including domestic battery and aggravated assault on officers. Two victims, including a woman who provided a key, were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Separately, a west Lawrence fire damaged a home on Cynthia Street with one resident treated and released, and a Leavenworth man died in a two vehicle crash on Kansas Highway 7 near Lansing.
Lawrence police investigate the death of a 52 year old man found unresponsive Tuesday morning in a Lawrence hotel room at the Howard Johnson. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending as detectives gather evidence and seek information from the public.
