Lawrence district eyes $74 million aid for 2017 18 budget
The Lawrence school board approved budget items for August with plans to hire two elementary and two secondary teachers on contingency while reducing about a dozen fulltime positions to save roughly $815,000. The district expects $74 million in general fund aid, including special education funds, up about $6.2 million from 2016 17. Contingent hires target hot spots as class sizes are not expected to rise. An extra $400,000 could fund higher internet, utilities costs and the addition of the Lawrence College and Career Center. A $248,000 allocation funds classified staff market study recommendations and potential raises. Education reporter Joanna Hlavacek.
