Lawrence school board bypasses low bid process on 70M plan
The Lawrence school board moved to negotiate with two firms for most of the 87 million bond projects, skipping the traditional low bid process. McCown Gordon of Kansas City will supervise about 68 million in work at Lawrence High School Free State High School and four middle schools, with MarLan Construction of Lawrence handling remaining duties.

New England family reconnects with Lawrence origins
Pete Woodward and his blind son Brinto Woodward III traveled from Holderness New Hampshire to Lawrence to reconnect with family roots. They touched a bronze plaque at Corner Grille 801 Massachusetts Street reminding them the building was built by Pete Woodward II’s great grandfather in 1866. The visit included a framed book of matches believed to date to the early 20th century.

Kaw Valley Riverfest lights up Burcham Park Fourth of July
The inaugural Kaw Valley Riverfest runs 4 to 10 p.m. at Burcham Park near Second and Indiana Streets with fireworks to follow at about 9 p.m. Outside food and alcohol are banned. only novelty items are allowed. The National Weather Service forecasts a mostly cloudy day with a high near 86 and a 30 percent chance of showers later tonight and again after 1 a.m. Wednesday.
