Rogers Questioned On Cambodia Move

Secretary of State William P. Rogers faced questioning in a closed Senate session as lawmakers fear the Cambodia restrictions are being stretched. State moves to acquire land for U.S. 59 near Lawrence

Kansas highway officials ordered right of way acquisition for 5.2 miles of four lane highway on U S 59 south of Lawrence from Pleasant Grove Hill to the 23rd and Iowa intersection. Design approval was reported by involved agencies. The commission also awarded a $989 900 contract to Hamm Asphalt Corp for widening and surfacing 10 2 miles of U S 54 near Yates Center.

Cafeterias in Lawrence district earn praise for decorum

Journal-World reporters visited Lawrence district high school lunchrooms and found orderly scenes with cheerful, busy students. No major disruptions were observed as staff and parents monitored behavior and answered questions while students enjoyed lunch and social time.

Three 18-year-olds charged in Lawrence car thefts

Three Lawrence youths age 18 Delbert Thomas William Bernard Thomas and Ronnie Jamerson were arrested after a stolen car report led to a 8 20 p m police stop. They face ten felony counts and one misdemeanor including two car thefts burglary of a car grand theft and a missing funds check. One suspect faces unlawful weapon use for a switch blade found at booking. The cars were taken from Kansas Colors Press and Hallmark Cards lots and driven to a secluded Douglas County Fairgrounds area. All three remain in Douglas County Jail.

Night Raid Bags Snakes from Omo Ranch to LHS

Lawrence High biology teacher Stan Roth and student Eric Shulenberger drove 661 miles round trip to Benomo's Gray County ranch. They captured 24 coachwhips and blue racers, cooled to 40 degrees, for sex and size studies then returned to measure and classify them in Roth's classroom. They plan spring release near the ranch.

Cal Williams Named Special Assistant to Governor for Education

Calvin Williams associate director of urban affairs at Kansas University will serve as a special aide to Gov. Robert Docking on educational affairs. The Puerto Rico native, former coordinator at Temple University, will continue teaching while handling liaison duties with education groups and advisors.

Obscene Leaflet Impersonates Journal-World Near KU Campus

A fringe store near the Kansas University campus distributed an obscene printed sheet claiming to be an advertising supplement to the Lawrence Journal-World. The Journal-World states it has no connection with the publication and the name is used falsely and misleadingly.
