Washington AP reports highly educated professionals engineers scientists and technicians face sharp unemployment in a tightening job market. Nixon calls it a temporary switch to peacetime production while experts warn of a prolonged white collar job crisis amid rising layoffs across blue and white collar sectors.
Douglas County officials said they will terminate welfare assistance to Gary D. Jackson a Kansas University student amid policy concerns over subsidizing a college education. The case of Monte Beckwith also involved, with hearings and halted aid pending review while 165 general assistance recipients will be checked after spring listings are printed.
David A. Christopher of 1213 Ohio Avenue was treated at Watkins Memorial Hospital Thursday night for a gunshot wound to the left hand. He told KU police he tripped over his dog, the pistol discharged, and the slug fractured the first finger. Lawrence detectives recovered the weapon at his apartment.
Monroe Waldo, 47, a Kansas University Security Department sergeant, withdrew from the Lawrence City Commission race citing a conflict of interest with his Civil Service status. He said KU employment precludes public office unless he resigns, expressing appreciation for support while choosing to stay with KU.
