Berlin Faces Acute Refugee Influx in Western Sector
Berlin struggles with a growing refugee stream from the Soviet zone, reaching about 400 people weekly. Roughly 10,000 refugees inhabit West Berlin, with 3,500 in city camps and 3,000 in Red Cross and relief-run camps. Costs mount as camps operate on strained funds. A screening system flags pseudo refugees, while many rest on the black market or private aid. Only about 700 monthly admissions can be approved for permanent residence, leaving aging refugees with uncertain futures.

Among Our Neighbors- FARM PERSONALITIES
Jess O Connor who lives two miles east of Stull cared for orphans from Atchison eight years ago and raised Johnny Inloes now 21. The O Connors also raised Johnny’s three younger brothers and their own two sons Glen and Everett. Johnny, now married, lives nearby with his family and works in agriculture. The family runs a 320 acre home farm bought in 1940 plus 400 acres rented, with crops including wheat, corn, sorghum and alfalfa, and 60 head of beef cattle with 35 dairy cows. O Connor recalls a 1949 hail storm that damaged sorghum. He traveled with his family to Washington, D C, New York, California and Minnesota, and enjoys baseball and basketball. He started as a tool dresser in oil fields, later working in El Dorado and a lumber yard. He and his wife Beulah view farming’s ups and downs with optimism.
