Topeka Jan 24 The condition of the 1950 Kansas wheat crop varies across the state reflecting moisture received in the past five and a half months. East sections have adequate top soil moisture while central areas show below normal precipitation, especially November to mid January. Western Kansas reports normal to well above normal rainfall August to October but far below normal since November. Wheat remains dormant with extremely dry topsoil in the west two thirds, soil blowing noted in several counties, and wind damage reported in multiple counties including Saline and McPherson.

Berger Named Fifth Ward Councilman to Complete Term
A. W. Gus Berger aged 79 of 937 Rhode Island Street was confirmed as fifth ward councilman succeeding Harry Winters Jr who resigned after moving out of the ward. Berger, a retired railroad mail clerk and Lawrence National Bank director, will serve only the remainder of the term and will not run for election as a Democrat. He helped form the council in 1995 and previously chaired funds oversight and various committees. The council also approved trading two 1949 Ford patrol cars plus 1500 for two 1950 Pontiacs, funded by the police equipment fund and meter receipts, with a Willys jeep traded in for maintenance of parking meters. Additional actions included nine retailer licenses and purchase of a 1949 14-ton International truck for the street department.
