Falls Mayo tops KU scoring with 27 points including a late key three and a tying three point play. Kansas clawed back from a halftime deficit but WVU held on as Hunter Dickinson and Bidunga anchored defense and Small sealed the win with late foul trouble and a desperate finish.
West Virginia escapes Kansas 62 61 as Powell and S Harris pace the Mountaineers while Adams and Dickinson lead KU. Dickinson noted a tough first half and late plays shaping the outcome as Self remarked on the team’s early league setback and Orlando trip ahead.
Kansas coach Bill Self used a frontcourt of Hunter Dickinson and Dereck Bidunga to counter West Virginia's size and pressure. Bidunga contributed eight points, 11 rebounds, and strong defense while Mayo scored 27 on 6-for-13 shooting and perfect 13-for-13 at the line, as Bidunga's screens and rim runs opened space for Mayo to attack and for KU to extend a first-half lead.
Schneider praised Bechard for integrating the program within the athletic department rather than in isolation, noting his leadership shaped how to treat people and represent Kansas and the Jayhawk brand. Bechard retires after a tenure that formed a lasting culture, with Self predicting the decision may invite reflection but also happiness as he spends time with family.
