Don't ask don't tell fuels gay discharges in military
A gay rights group says discharges for homosexual activity rose to 850 in the year ending Sept. 30, 1999, up from 722 the prior year and far above 597 in 1994 when the policy began. Women accounted for 29 percent of dismissals. Defense Secretary Cohen calls the rise a statistical fluctuation while 36 House members demand action to enforce the policy and curb harassment.
