Blaze guts Sunflower Surplus fire prompts power cut in downtown Lawrence
A major blaze gutted Sunflower Surplus causing water and smoke damage to nearby Visions Optical and Carlson Wagonlyt Travel. No sprinklers existed in affected buildings. KPL cut power to 24 000 volts area while firefighters pumped 7 000 to 8 000 gallons per minute. City officials and residents watched as police secured blocks and planners assessed losses for two clients of local insurer Calvin Eddy and Rappleman.
