Arrest of Deserter From U S Army in North Lawrence
Edward Saunders a 27 year old Black man was arrested by undersheriff George Schultz in North Lawrence on a deserter charge from the United States army. He registered at Seminole Oklahoma and failed to report to camp last August. Seminole authorities notified Sheriff J R Woodward, Saunders was held in county jail then taken to Camp Funston to be handed to army officers with Schultz to receive a $50 reward. A second arrest, John Cooper, for forging a check, was made by Sheriff Woodward and Schultz after he cashed at the University Book Store and bought items with a $9 check for 95 cents.
