Robert Wagner 21 of Bald win is arraigned on battery on a police officer and kidnapping of Michael Shute 22 after a Friday incident. A second suspect Jimmy Pat McGinnis 19 faces kidnapping and aggravated assault arraignment later today. Bond set at 25000 each. McGinnis' brother Bill Mike McGinnis faces aiding felon charge. Shute was abducted around 2 am after pulling over a car for a traffic violation. Majestic winter resident.
Fifty-five Lawrence High School students join 92 top juniors from eight Douglas and Jefferson County schools at a Kansas Honor Students dinner February 20 in KU Union Ballroom. Delbert Shankel will speak. Vince Bilotta will oversee awards. Recipients must rank in the top 10 percent of their class. Names span Lawrence Baldwin Eudora Jefferson North McLouth Oskaloosa Valley Falls. A separate note reports Tonganoxie picketers at city hall and a new Mud Creek bridge opening pending final work.
CHICAGO AP reports Elijah Muhammad founder of the Nation of Islam is in critical condition at Mercy Hospital after congestive heart failure. He entered Jan. 30 for a routine checkup. moved to ICU after Saturday event. Washington AP notes Iran will receive six new destroyers with enhanced anti aircraft warfare capability. Iran ordered 80 F 14 fighters and considered C5 transports after Aug 27 agreement. TEL AVIV AP reports Ezra Avraham 19 admitted for grenade at Natanya nightclub. he claimed motive was to make a noise after insult. remanded for 15 days.
The Lawrence City Commission will review a petition asking for a referendum on the location of the city maintenance garage. A court hearing on related injunctions and the petition's sufficiency is expected today in Douglas County District Court. The agenda also includes condemnation procedures, budget items, and various public notices.
Senators Jackson and Humphrey called for a congressional probe of the Defense Department contract with Vinnell Corp to train Saudi troops guarding oil wells. The $77 million program aims to assemble a 1,000-man force in Saudi Arabia this July to train three mechanized infantry battalions and an artillery unit, raising concerns over deploying U.S. forces to train foreign troops.
