Pearson Talks on Clinton Parkway Plan in Lawrence

New State Law Shifts Voter Registration to County Clerk

In early 1972 Kansas moves voter registration to the county level with Delbert Mathia taking over from the city clerk. Rural residents may register starting Monday or at the Aug 1 primary or Nov 7 general. City residents register 20 days before elections. veterans and 18 21 year olds have new procedures as Vera Mercer notes. Residents must meet residency requirements to vote in upcoming elections.

Konza Prairie Lands Donated for Ecological Research

Kansas State University receives about 920 acres of native prairie eight miles south of Manhattan for long range ecological studies. Donated by the Nature Conservancy with anonymous funds, the land will aid research on improving farm and grazing land productivity. The site along Interstate 70 near Kansas 177 will be named Konza Prairie at the donor’s request.

Farm Prices Rise in Kansas Mid-December Report

Kansas prices received by farmers in mid-December edged higher than November and were up from December 1970. The composite index stood at 266 percent of the 1910-14 base, vs 262 in November and 242 a year earlier. Grains hogs lambs milk and eggs increased while beef cattle and calves edged down.

Appraisers Work On U.S. 59 Land

Three State Highway Commission appraisers are assigned to value 128 tracts for the four lane upgrade of U S 59 south of Lawrence. The K 10 corridor from Lawrence to De Soto has photogrammetry work under way with about six weeks left and survey work over 50 percent complete. Right of way appraisal finished on 29 of 46 tracts from De Soto to K 7.

Richard Dale a Manhattan sophomore on duty at the lobby desk reported two men entered the dormistic desk area one pistol whipped him while the other demanded the money kept there they took a metal change box and a money sack from a filing cabinet fleeing after striking Dale with losses estimated at 97 30 dollars Dale was to be examined at Watkins Hospital.
