Glass of Water Suits Him Just Fine
Richard Antonio a 26 year old Wilmington carpenter survived nine hot days on a raft after the Ixtapa sank 60 miles west of the Dry Tortugas on December 19. He and Tom Rash and Juan Puga lived on the raft as two others Denton and Spaulding disappeared. They drifted with the Gulf Stream toward the Florida Keys and washed ashore at Elliott Key near Miami. Antonio said they drank rain water and a dolphin they speared for food, and they felt hopeless as planes and ships passed by without spotting them. The raft was spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter and Rash and Puga were found alive, with Denton later found dead near Elliott Key. Antonio, now in Mercy Hospital, felt better but craved a steak.
