New York AP reports strong demand for champagne and caviar as Americans brace for lavish New Year celebrations. Caviar remains scarce and pricier, while imported champagne is plentiful before surcharges and dock strikes. Domestic champagne shares steady price trends, with some expected increases after holidays.
AP reports the heaviest air attack on North Vietnam in over three years ended after more than 1 000 combat strikes in five days. U.S. losses include three planes, five missing fliers, and one rescued. North Vietnam claims 14 U.S. planes shot down and pilots killed or captured.
Heavy rain struck Lawrence on Wednesday dumping 1.46 inches as drivers faced hazardous conditions. The Kansas University weather observer recorded the near one and a half inch total while the sun shone at times.
The outlook calls for increasing cloudiness tonight and Friday with little precipitation. Temperatures fall to the low 20s tonight then rise to near 45 Friday as clouds linger. Precipitation chances are 0 percent tonight and 20 percent Friday, with no precipitation Saturday through Monday in the Kansas extended outlook.
The Rev. Mel J. Vos a 30 year old pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church was struck and killed while jogging on Kansas Highway 192 a mile east of Winchester by a car driven by a 17 year old. The highway patrol reported the fatal incident occurred Wednesday night.

Pasadena prepares for the 70th Tournament of Roses with 59 floats 23 bands 200 equestrians and 2500 participants. The event costs about 85000 dollars annually, funded by taxpayers and revenues from tourism and sponsorships.
The USS Command reported one American killed in action in Vietnam last week the lowest weekly toll in nearly seven years. Five Americans died of nonhostile causes and 29 were wounded in action. The total American deaths in action now reach 45,627 with 302,396 wounded and 10,123 nonhostile deaths. South Vietnamese casualties include 137,660 killed and 297,898 wounded, with North Vietnamese and Viet Cong totaling 788,692 killed.
Vic McLeran chief of communications at the Kansas Forestry Fish and Game Commission returns after a 15 day suspension for hair length. He says hair was thinned not cut and barely covers his ears. Commissioner Richard Wettersten suspended him on December 15 without pay for violating grooming rules requiring neat reasonable length.
AL Lawrence Banks will close at 3 p.m. Friday, December 31, and will not reopen that day. Customers are asked to plan withdrawals accordingly.
Charles C. Eldredge former curator of collections and acting director of the Kansas University Museum of Art has been named director. Vice Chancellor Francis Heller announced the appointment Eldredge 27 will take the post after serving as acting director since July. He is an Amherst graduate and holds M A and Ph D degrees from the University of Minnesota. He is married to Jane and they reside at 51 Ohio Street.
Three persons were injured, though none seriously, in two related accidents this morning on the Kansas Turnpike Bridge over North Second Street in North Lawrence. A westbound late model car driven by Barbara V. Oberhelman, 43, Kansas City, plunged over the guard railing and rolled down the embankment after crossing the bridge. The driver was pinned but sustained minor injuries and may not have been wearing a seat belt. About 25 minutes later a semi-trailer truck struck the rear of a car driven by Floyd K. King, 31, Topeka, which then hit another car. the second wreck followed in the same location.
Gov. Docking announces a 13 county EDA funded economic development district to coordinate growth in Rice Reno Kingman Harper Sumner Sedgwick Harvey McPherson Butler Cowley Chautauqua Elk Greenwood with Wichita as the development center. The district will hire a full time staff and work with local governments and groups for regional planning.
