London dispatch reports King George III showing some lung improvement but overall strength and recuperative power remain weak. Five specialists reviewed progress with new measures considered to aid convalescence while nourishment is better and night sleep improved, yet general condition remains poor.
Kansas residents Mrs Laura Robertshaw and Charles Holt escaped serious harm when their Graham-Paia sedan struck a telephone pole extending from a parked Ottawa Telephone Co truck on Highway 73 West eight miles north of Ottawa. Both women suffered cuts and bruises and were treated at Community Hospital Ottawa. Holt was lightly scratched. The pole lacked a light and the truck light was dim, hindering visibility. The car was heavily damaged and passed through the windshield and rear window. Also mentioned: J. Howard, manager of the Penney Store, ill with influenza at his Vermont Street home.

She claims their marriage was companionate and that they agreed not to meet again if either found a more congenial partner, despite sailing February 16 to confirm their bond.
Evangeline Booth arrives in Southampton to address the Salvation Army high council stating American Salvationists are united over expected improvements and deny backing her to succeed General Bramwell Booth. She expresses faith that officers and people in America support her.
Ottawa reports foresee failure in the United States Canada Mexico Cuba and Newfoundland discussions on antismuggling opening January 7 and on radio opening January 9. The anti smuggling talks lack cabinet representation from both nations. The radio talks are blamed on the United States breach of the August agreement. The U.S. radio commission allocated most shore and long wave lengths to American stations, despite the tentative August plan for shared bands.
President Coolidge hunted on Sapelo Island near Brunswick with Howard E. Coffin and Colonel Starling of the White House Secret Service. After breakfast he started portrait sittings with artist Fran O Salisbury and spent about a half hour actually shooting before returning to Mrs Coffin's home for lunch.
Hoover, aboard the Utah on a quiet Florida stay, prepares for a demanding stretch before his March 4 inauguration. He plans to write a major inaugural address while choosing a cabinet, with Mellon likely to head the Treasury. He will not push legislation in Washington during the stay and may call an extra session only if farm measures loom.
Van Lear Black publisher of the Baltimore Sun will depart London on the Majestic to complete his London to Capetown round trip. He bought a new Fokker aircraft matching the prior craft and will be piloted by the same navigator who led his European and African expeditions. Topeka Kans Dec 28 the special legislative roads committee heard various proposals for road funding reform and legislation to be drafted for winter session. County commissioners proposed 60 30 10 split of federal aid funds license fees and three cent gas tax among state counties and townships. If township system is abolished they favor 60 40 split between state and counties. Representatives from leagues rural carriers and taxpayers groups testified. An executive session and sub committee draft bills followed the hearing.
Governor elect Reed and former Kansas governor Henry J. Allen met in Topeka on December 28 for a friendly breakfast and several hours in Reed’s hotel suite. They touched on the impending Curtis resignation and a possible Reed successor in the Senate. Allen declined to predict when the vice president elect would resign. Reed also scheduled meetings with the state school code commission and the board of regents chair.
All ex service men are invited to a big game dinner at the Eli Ferrell Dorsey Legion post rooms at 7 o clock Saturday evening. Col H C Ericsson donated a hind quarter of wild elk meat shot in Wyoming. The meat was transported to a railroad for shipment to Lawrence, and Ericsson will attend to share experiences. Special entertainment will be provided and all ex service men are urged to attend.
Atchison newspaper men announce purchase of the Falls City Neb Daily Journal by a new corporation led by Judge Virgil Falloon. Stockholders include Eugene Howe Hawk Nusbaum Jr N W Todd and Falloon. Nusbaum and Todd will travel to Falls City January 2 to assume control.
A Kansas City bootlegging figure known as a national leader in illegal operations was arrested here on a warrant charging bribery. The suspect reportedly sought to influence witnesses in a trial linked to Franke Ghee Chee and Mayo, and was taken into custody with a woman companion present. The case involves alleged piracy and illicit funds in organized crime.

In police court William Carter of 1743 Ohio Street and Ernest Williams known as Country Bill had their trials continued to next Friday morning. Carter faces possession of intoxicating liquor charges while Williams is charged with sale and possession of intoxicating liquor. Both are on $200 bonds. The raid on Carter's restaurant at 304 East Ninth Street uncovered part of a quantity of alleged liquor. Officers also detained a visitor at the cafe and found a bottle of alleged liquor on him.

Messer, proprietor of the Pleasant Grove general merchandise store south of Lawrence, was robbed of more than $300 after leaving his store. The masked bandit fired a shot and escaped into the darkness before authorities could track him. Messer, brother of Jim Messer, notified police and both county and city officers searched the countryside but found no trace of the suspect.
Chicago dec 28 AP John Stege deputy police commissioner found in Cook county jail a man sentenced to life for murder over two years ago but never sent to Joliet to begin his term. The inmate William J three fingered Jack White shot and killed a policeman in 1935. The case went to the supreme court after conviction but no action yet.
London reports a surge of mail to the Lord Mayor's fund for distressed miners after the Prince of Wales appeal. Madison House staff, reinforced by bank workers, process thousands of gifts. The fund neared $320,000 with government promising a pound-for-pound match.
Leavenworth was selected as the 1929 convention city by the Inter-State Literary Association of Kansas and the West during a three day session at St Luke's A M E Church. About 100 attendees heard talks on Negro history and education, with several papers and musical numbers presented by local and regional speakers from Leavenworth, Lawrence, Topeka, Atchison, and nearby towns. The next session was set for 9 o'clock tonight.

Reported talks say Tex Rickard signed Jack Sharkey to a February bout in Miami with Young Stribling for the winner to meet Jack Dempsey for the title. Dempsey said the only possible link to the boxers would be as referee if a Miami match occurs.

Division managers of Kansas Electric Power properties gathered today for the first session of a two day meeting at the K E P offices. The group reviewed the year and discussed future plans while budgeting decisions await approval. Lawrence men promoted to division managers were announced, with Johnson becoming Leavenworth district manager and Black named Borner Springs division head.
In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania Andrew J Bossy Gillis mayor of Newburyport Massachusetts escaped serious injury when a touring party car overturned on a slippery street. Police held the driver for reckless driving and a bond was posted for Gillis to appear at a hearing later today.
President Gerardo Machado signed an agreement drafted by Dr Eli Molinez, secretary of agriculture, to lift sugar planting and marketing limits for the upcoming crop. The pact ends the Takafa act and removes the export commission, allowing shippers more freedom in selling sugar products. In Texas, a separate AP dispatch reports a pint of anthrax serum was rushed from Fort Sary Hongton to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to treat exposed individuals after a suspected cattle disease exposure.
