Downtown grocery plan eyed by Lawrence residents
Fahy, a single father of three, shops at Checkers via a 40 minute door to door bus ride, part of Lawrence’s 13 000 food desert residents in northeastern Lawrence. Community health data show more than 24 000 Lawrence residents live in deserts with over 10 000 below poverty. The downtown full service grocery effort, backed by neighborhood groups and developers led by Doug Compton and Mike Treanor, faces lawsuits and city incentive debates as planners press for a meat dairy and produce hub accessible by all transport modes. Committee meetings occur weekly at Cap City Bank and the Lawrence Public Library as efforts continue to locate a downtown grocery.

City updates gifts policy guidance from city manager
December updates clarify that gifts to the city are generally not accepted though incidental items or meals tied to business are allowed. City Manager Tom Markus directs staff to seek direction on gifts, with recipients urged to donate to charity and givers asked to refrain from future gifts.
