Fifteen Men Rescued From Sinking Guam Pioneers
The freighter Guam Pioneers sank 340 miles southwest of Los Angeles after flooding in the hold. Fifteen crewmen fled to two lifeboats and drifted eight hours in dense fog until Coast Guard planes and USS Picket located them. A Transmarine Navigation Co spokesman called the rescue a miracle. Captain Mahlon Beese and three other Americans were aboard along with Cuban Greek and Spanish crew members.
