John Curry Battenfeld 19, a junior at the University of Kansas from Kansas City Missouri, died when his 1938 Ford left Highway 10, rolled, and came to rest. Dan Hamilton 22, son of Republican National Chairman John D. M. Hamilton, was seriously injured. Sheriff said speed or evasive action may have caused the crash. Battenfeld died en route to hospital. Hamilton remained in serious condition with possible skull fracture or concussion.
