Uruguayan authorities allow the German pocket battleship Graf Spee a prudent stay to repair after Wednesday's shelling. Refueling began as British warships intensified blockade pressure and debate over internment versus freedom continued in Montevideo.
Ruth Judd the murderess who escaped from the Arizona State hospital was taken into custody on Yuma main street after walking about 140 miles toward Phoenix. She tearfully admitted her identity and said she fled to escape hospital attendants.
Finland paid 234 693 on its war debt to the United States amid heavy fighting with Russia. Hjalmar Procope presented the check to Secretary Morgenthau, who will hold it in a special account pending congress guidance. The debt totals 8 142 000, with Hungary the only other nation to pay a portion, 9 828 of 52 260.
Lawrence residents will hear Christmas carols from the lighted tower of the Dyche museum next week. Flood lights and amplifiers enhance the tower as KFKU studios broadcast the selected recordings to listeners citywide. Sunday features the new system from 3 to 3 40 PM, with nightly shows at 7 PM. Monday offers a mixed quartet from 7 15 to 7 30 PM. Tuesday will include a male quartet and carols.
Six University men traveled to Topeka for a Sigma Delta Chi alumni meeting honoring Kirke Mechem dramatist novelist and Kansas Historical Society secretary. National counselor J J Kistler presented Mechem with the fraternity key after he was voted a national honorary member. Accompanying students included Harry Hill Stewart Jones Bill Jensen Gene Kuhn and Jay Simon.
Orange Bowl officials selected two from the Southeastern Conference and two from the Big Six for the Georgia Tech Missouri game on New Year's Day. The designated referees include T. G. Kain of Nashville for Georgia, Dwight Ream of Topeka as umpire, B. M. Hackney Jr. of High Point as head linesman, and Parke Carroll of Kansas City as field judge.
Finland reports it has paid 234693 in war debt to the United States as it seeks peaceful negotiations with Soviet Russia but warns of fierce resistance if Moscow aims at conquest. Helsinki says 16 days of war show heavy casualties while Finland summons uncalled reservists and strengthens forces on the Karelian front amid Russian advances toward Salmijarvi near the Norwegian border.
London reports a fierce air clash as British and German planes fought near Frisian islands. British losses were four German and three British aircraft, with raids on Sylt Norderney and Borkum seaplane bases and a crippled German cruiser involved.

In Montevideo Uruguay on December 15 the Graf Spee crew buried 36 sailors killed in Wednesday’s naval battle. The German flag shrouds their pine coffins as 30 officers and crew members come ashore unarmed for the services aided by Uruguayan honor guards. Local German civilians stand at Nazi salutes as hearses transport the coffins to the cemetery.
Chilean authorities said the German freighter Duesseldorf was captured not sunk. Finnish high command reported destruction of a Russian destroyer by coastal batteries along with 20 tanks captured in heavy fighting near Suomussalmi. British Prime Minister Chamberlain arrived in France by air to visit British forces.
The Court of Awards for Boy Scouts of the Douglas district met last night at the Chamber of Commerce rooms under chairman Ralph Graber. Assisting were T. M. Frazee, Troop 65, Bald win. Earle Durbin. Joe Simpson. and Thomas F. Anthony from Kaw Council. Awards went to multiple troops for health, first aid, handicraft, bird study, swimming, photography, bugling, carpentry, farm plans, automobiling, cycling, and more with named recipients across troops 52 58 61 65 55.
Eugene Washington, 31, a Lawrence Negro, received three years in El Reno reformatory for sending an extortion letter by mail to Chicago manager John C. Pollock threatening destruction to Union Pacific trains. Billy Crawford, 19, guilty of stealing a car from St. Louis to Fort Scott, also got three years. Aloysious William Herbers, 35, of Valley Falls, got a two year probated sentence for forging and passing a government check.
Geneva reports say the League coordinates arms supplies for Finland while Finns form a foreign legion to fight Soviet Russia. Paris and London offices will control transport and credits with France and Britain providing arms and munitions. Polish pilots and Czech soldiers in France offered service, and Norway and Sweden promise transport facilities.
The Civilian Aeronautics Authority plans an advanced aeronautical course at KU as part of a nationwide program. Currently 50 KU students train at Municipal airport under the CAA, with nine former participants eligible for advanced work after tests.
Charles M O Bryan 29 of St Paul Kansas died when his car struck a small bridge eight miles west of Pittsburg on federal highway 160. He was impaled on a steel guard rail broken from the bridge by the impact. He was the son of H W O Bryan, a prominent St Paul stockman.
Washington reports 350 old age insurance benefit claims daily as of December. Officials predict 1,000,000 claims in 1940 for insured workers and dependents with over 100 million dollars in monthly benefits. Checks begin next month testing the mass security system nationwide.
Santa will greet shoppers on Massachusetts Street from 2 to 5 PM and plan three similar visits next week. A wrapping station opened at 889 Massachusetts Street with strong business as wrappers report good activity. The post office offered stamps and package weighing with a clerk present. Lawrence stores stay open until 9 PM starting Monday and the post office maintains a 9:30 PM window. The Christmas committee plans nightly entertainment along the downtown streets next week.
In Topeka on December 15, forecaster A. D. Robb said cold weather and moisture will pause as Montana’s abnormal conditions keep wintry blasts away. Skies are clear across Kansas with temps near freezing in the west and 35 to 40 in the east and south. Topeka reported a 62 degree high yesterday, well above normal, while Phillipsburg logged a 28 degree low.
A new donation of one dollar brings the Finnish Relief Fund total to sixty five dollars. The Journal-World acknowledges the contribution from A Friend and notes the ongoing support for Finnish relief efforts.

Sixty two British seamen from nine merchantmen surrendered after the Graf Spee raid described waiting below decks in a prison directly under a turret. They recalled singing during shelling and counting 17 British hits as the battle ended with the Graf Spee ashore in Montevideo.
More than 200 KU fine arts students and faculty join the sixty third all musical vespers in Hoch auditorium at 4 pm. A 100 voice choir, 90 piece university symphony, tableaux, soloists, and an afternoon and night program with a brass quartet open the Christmas event attended last year by over 8,000.
Lieut Gov Carl E. Friend presided at the Topeka water shortage parley called by Gov Payne Ratner. About 300 state officials and farmers were expected to attend to seek a long range program to combat recurring droughts. Speakers included Ogden S. Jones of the university water and sewage lab and Dr N P Sherwood professor of bacteriology and water committee chairman.
