Mobs raided Elisabethville's U S consulate and pro Katanga demonstrators attacked the U S Embassy in Brussels amid UN efforts to halt fighting in Katanga. Gen McKeown said Tshombe has lost control while UN and U S delegates push for a peaceful path to Congo unity and stability.
The AFL-CIO delegates passed a resolution by an overwhelming voice vote denying readmittance to the exiled Teamsters while James R. Hoffa leads. Meany said the Teamsters cannot meet the test with Hoffa in charge and the action ends Hoffa’s bid to return to federation leadership. Walter Reuther urged unity to push a broad organizing drive.

An Israeli tribunal convicts Adolf Eichmann of crimes against the Jews and humanity, war crimes, and membership in the SS and SD. The three judges label him a key Nazi operative and life sentence sentencing is expected by Friday. Eichmann sat in a glass cage as verdicts were announced and the court outlined his role in shipping millions to extermination camps.
Edward T. McCormick resigns as president of the American Stock Exchange and Michael E. Mooney also resigns as general counsel. Exchange officials say the moves serve the exchange's best interests amid recent publicity. Joseph F. Reilly elected president pro tem by the board.
A weather system moving from the Rockies brings record subzero temperatures, heavy snow, and flooding rains across the Midwest and South. At least 55 deaths linked to the prior storm. roads closed in Arizona. snow depths rise in New Mexico. widespread snow and ice affect Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and the Ohio Valley.

Preliminary hearing for Louis Lee Williams 21 Ottawa set for 2 p m Jan 12 in Douglas County Court on two counts of fourth degree manslaughter for the hit run deaths of KU students John Tamasi 22 and Alice Tamasi 20 on U S 59 south of Lawrence. Williams held on $10 000 bond identified by four passengers as the driver.
