Soviet Demands Heusinger Handoff for War Crimes Trial

The Soviet government demanded the United States hand over West German General Adolf Heusinger, NATO military committee chair, for trial in Moscow. Moscow alleges he organized civilian reprisals and issued deadly punitive orders, while Bonn and Washington dismiss the claim as propaganda and politically timed before the December NATO ministerial meeting. Heusinger, 64, has long been a Soviet target. he has led Germany's postwar armed forces and served as NATO chief of staff.

Bluebonnet Bowl Tickets Expected Near 1000 For KU Rice

The KU Athletic Office plans to distribute about 1000 Bluebonnet Bowl tickets by Friday for the Saturday 1 p.m. kickoff in Houston. Tickets will go to KU and Rice fans and EU team members, with local outlets carrying game telecasts on channels 5 and 13.

Peck Improves After Bus Collision Injury

Arthur S. Peck of 512 Tenn. St. is slowly improving at Lawrence Memorial Hospital from a badly mangled right ankle and foot after being struck by a bus at the intersection of 9th and Mass streets on Friday, December 1.

Racket Ended by Arrest in Nationwide Check Fraud

Two men Forrest B. Hartley and Calvin W. Barfield were arrested in Denver on interstate forged check charges after operating a temporary Lawrence office. They hired a secretary who cashed checks at local merchants. the FBI notes the scheme spanned several cities with outstanding bad checks. The pair, held in Kansas City in lieu of bond, faced arraignment with their wives at a Denver motel and later returned to Kansas.

FAA chief Halaby cited for careless operation

An FAA inspector recommended that administrator Najeeb E. Halaby be cited for careless operation after his agency's new million dollar jet touched a parked United Airlines aircraft at Washington National Airport on November 9. No injuries occurred but damage and a one hour flight delay resulted. Halaby ordered an internal investigation just as with any other incident.

Santa Fe Ad Valorem Tax Mails to 70 Counties

The Santa Fe Railway mailed its first half of 1961 ad valorem tax payments to 70 counties. Douglas County owes $82,333.31 of the $5,437,293.24 bill. The deadline for first half payment is December 20, with $1,388,023.36 collected so far of its $5,256,874.54 tax abstract.

University presents Christmas choral and instrumental program

Herbert Schumacher, Conley Harris and Edward Anderson lead a Three Kings tableau with a choral ensemble performing Deck the Hall and other carols. Bill Forbis Joins Ward Operation in Lawrence

Bill Forbis, formerly manager of the Lexington Missouri Montgomery Ward store, assumes management of the Ward operation in Lawrence. He began with Montgomery Ward in 1951 at Lawrence, served in the Army for two years, then returned to the Kansas City Kansas organization. He and his wife reside at 903 West 24th Street, succeeding Bill Allaman who has resigned.

Chamber Forms Panel To Study Local Research Park

The Lawrence chamber board voted to form a committee to study long term prospects for a regional research park with Kansas University, KU chancellor Clarke Wescoe pledging cooperation.
