A ninth floor trash chute fire at Hartford Hospital Friday killed 15 people including six patients, five visitors, and four staff. In Denver AP reports Dr. Carl L. Kober of the Martin Company describes a partly nuclear powered death ray. The device would emit a beam hotter than 100 000 degrees Fahrenheit to vaporize targets in space testing by 1963.

Havre Montana reports 18 degrees below zero amid a wide cold snap. Washington state highs around 30s, California near 50s, Texas and Florida in 70s.
The Associated Press reports two new nuclear submarines launched in the United States. The USS Tinosa from Portsmouth New Hampshire enters the water bow first due to its unusual hull shape. At 4300 tons it is the second ship of its class and comparable in speed to the USS Thresher.
The Kansas University concert choir directed by Clay ton Krehbiel performs an all German program at 3 30 p m Sunday in University Theatre Murphy Hall. Eighty voices sing Schutz Magnificat Brahms Nachtens Der Abend Zum Schluss and Zach motet Singet Dem Herrn.
Mrs Agnes Murray widowed former Journal World editor J W Murray was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Friday after a stroke at her home. She is reported in fair condition this morning and had a fair night.
Massachusetts Governor Volpe demanded the resignation of Boston Police Commissioner Leo J. Sullivan both orally and in writing. Sullivan refused both times. The clash arises during a public uproar over a Columbia Broadcasting System documentary showing police at a Back Bay bookie parlor raid.
Topeka GOP chairman Donald P. Schnacke says Secretary Freeman used an Air Force Convair for a Dodge City rally dinner costing taxpayers about 1800 dollars. He contrasts it with a 200 dollar first class jet trip and accuses the administration of taxpayer indifference.
An American battle group passed the Soviet checkpoint outside West Berlin and began marching 110 miles through Soviet territory toward West Germany. The Soviet side required 90 minutes to process 5 officers 181 men and 26 vehicles. Company C of the 1st Battle Group 18th Infantry returns to West Germany after four months in Berlin. In Berlin eight refugees crossed the Red Wall in the past 24 hours two were East German People’s Police members.
Oakland City Councilman Dan Marovich seeks a mate for Effie the 11 year old 244 ton elephant at the Oakland Zoo. A fundraising appeal of about 3000 dollars is proposed to mate the lonely pachyderm, prompting a quip from another council member.
A Panamanian freighter sank in a South China Sea storm Friday night with 33 feared dead or missing aboard. Rescue operations were underway as authorities searched for survivors and determined the ship’s fate.
Dillon's Bakery will begin full operation Monday at 1011-1013 N. H. St. The new unit, costing about $200,000, will supply Dillon stores in Lawrence, Manhattan, and Junction City and may expand its service area later. Keith Lucas, manager, said readiness looks good. The one story brick veneer installation is among the largest in the Dillon complex with modern equipment.
Residents driving by 738 N. H. St. in Lawrence found Winter Chevrolet spotless with no snow in the lot. A caller asked how, and staff replied they had driven the cars inside Friday night for a fast finish.
Dale Hall faced possible dismissal as Army football coach after a 13-7 defeat to Navy last Saturday. Hall, 34, a former Blaik era halfback and Parsons Kansas native, led Army teams to 16 wins 11 losses and 2 ties at The Point.
Pope John XXIII issues an encyclical on Leo I urging worldwide Christian unity and a dawn of universal reconciliation. Vatican aides say the document aims to unite Christians against atheistic communism and leads toward the church council planned to open soon.
In Topsham Maine 17 year old Shirley Rollins was slain while en route to beauty school. Jerome Michaud 22 of Brunswick is held on charges of stabbing and beating her with a brick after a car engine stalled. He reportedly signed a statement later describing the encounter and arrest followed.
Balfour S. Jeffrey, president of the Kansas Power and Light Co. Topeka, will speak at Monday noon’s Lawrence Rotary Club meeting. Last spring KU honored him with the Distinguished Service citation and he was named Man of the Year, the outstanding graduating senior, in 1928.
Wakarusa A-team defeated Vinland 29 to 27 at Wakarusa Valley School while Wakarusa B-team crushed Vinland 42 to 6. John Brann scored 10 points for the A-team and Paul Whaley added 9.
In loving memory of Katharine Barton who died December 10 1957 four years ago. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Sadly missed by Mr and Mrs Robert Bucheim and Mrs Earl Lee Reavis.
