The Saturday Column examines Kansas higher education funding as enrollments rise and budgets strain. Regents and college leaders seek solutions including reducing duplication, expanding KU as a hub, and adopting a quarter system to curb costs while preserving facilities.

The Defense Department seeks reactivation of 25 additional World War II cargo ships to support Viet Nam supply lines. The Maritime Administration said the ships will be used in intra-area and coastal operations around Viet Nam. Previously 50 mothball ships were reactivated. The Pentagon prefers U.S. ships when idle, though some foreign vessels have been chartered.
In Natchez Mississippi Negro leaders celebrate a historic victory as a three month boycott yields agreements with six city merchants. Charles Evers Mississippi field director of the NAACP hails the accords as the greatest concessions yet won for civil rights in the area. Mayor John Nosser's office released the details Friday calling them agreements rather than concessions.
Three Lawrence students at Kansas University have received promotions in the Air Force ROTC unit at KU. John Buhler of 625 Ohio Paul Longren of 1534 W 21st St and Kelly Cap of 1636 Del have all been promoted to cadet major or cadet captain.
Anne Buhler a KU sophomore daughter of Mr and Mrs Everett Buhler was crowned queen of the KU military ball sponsored by Scabbard and Blade. Judges included Lawrence Mayor Ernest Pulliam and KU officials. Buhler a Delta Gamma member majors in secondary education and is nominated by Air Force cadets.
Organist and Baker University faculty member Lester Groom will perform a 3 p.m. Sunday concert at Lawrence First Methodist Church. The program includes works by Couperin Bach Widor Franck and other pieces.
The Tau Sigma dance concert directed by students will be at 8 15 tonight and 3 30 p m Sunday in Hoch Auditorium Kansas University. A Lawrence Fire Department truck will bring Santa to a Sunday party at Templin Hall from 2 30 to 5 p m with about 50 Lawrence children. Salvation Army arranged the visit after Santa was originally to arrive by helicopter from Forbes AFB.
During U S in World Affairs Week KU hosts a Friday luncheon with a Viet Foreign Policy talk. A panel discussion drawing conclusions from the week’s talks will occur at 12 36 p m next Saturday. Student Union Activities leads the event with campus groups contributing.
A mother June Watson and her 20 month old son John Scott Watson sustained minor injuries in a car and truck collision at 6th and Mich Streets. The 34 year old and her child were treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released. The truck driver Billy Joe Whaley 22 of 640 N Second Street faced no reported injuries. Vehicle damage was about 800 dollars. Three unoccupied cars were damaged when a hillside rolling car struck them near 9th and La Streets causing about 300 dollars in damage.
Moscow reports Luna 8 functioning normally at 132,352 miles from Earth. Officials say the probe's trajectory is close to the prescribed one, marking another Soviet attempt at a soft lunar landing this year.
Lawrence school board selected six nominees for interim representation to a unified district covering Lawrence Grant Riverside Wakarusa Valley India Mackey and Kaw Valley areas. Nominated are Bowman 46 a KU instructor and Riv erside board member Heck 45 a farmer Breithaupt 51 a farmer Dr Bradley 39 a veterinarian Oldfather 45 a law professor. Interim board begins Jan 4 1966 with current Lawrence board members Six Pad dock and Althaus also on the panel. The unified district starts July 1 1966 with six interim members becoming first board of education for the new system.
President Johnson says the nation can take heart from the Montgomery convictions of three Ku Klux Klan members on conspiracy charges in the killing of civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo. Dr. King and other leaders call the verdicts hopeful but urge new civil rights legislation.
Edward A. Young fifty was ordered held for district court on a first degree murder charge in the Thanksgiving Day shooting of neighbor Stanley Schnichele thirty five. Police testimony said Young sought police protection from Schnichels and admitted shooting him.
Defense Department announced a January draft quota of 38 280 men including 8 980 for the Marine Corps to bolster U S military strength in Viet Nam. The Navy and Air Force made no requests.
U S officials say Communist China is burning bridges to stop a Soviet backed Viet Nam peace initiative while not predicting immediate Chinese troop involvement. Beijing defends North Viet Nam and criticizes U S power, signaling no urge to intervene unless the war escalates.
A group of 13 American students overseas on study grants argued with a U S congressional delegation in New Delhi about Viet Nam policy. Rep Clement Zablocki urged the students to learn facts before protesting and questioned joining Peace Corps or Army.
Communion Sunday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will welcome nine new members at the 10 30 a m worship service. A reception will follow with refreshments provided by Mrs Robert Freyer hostess chairman.
Connie Sickles daughter of Dwight Sickles of 1619 W 22nd St was named the DAR Good Citizen by Lawrence High School among four senior nominees. Selection was based on dependability service leadership and patriotism. She will receive a certificate from the DAR and may enter district competition. Other nominees were Lynn Corn Glenna Johnson and Sally Stark.
