U S Infantry Fight Off Viet Cong Assault Near Saigon

In a fierce battle 40 miles northwest of Saigon U S infantry faced repeated Viet Cong assaults aided by air power from U S jets and naval aircraft. Casualties were heavy for the Americans described as moderate by Saigon, with Viet Cong losses estimated up to 200.

McNown, KU Engineer Leader, Dies at 85

William Coleman McNown, chairman emeritus of the Kansas University Civil Engineering Department, died Sunday in Watkins Memorial Hospital at 85. He served 37 years on the Mt. Oread faculty after joining KU in 1913 and retiring in 1950. His son, John S. McNown, former KU dean, is on sabbatical leave as the Albert P. Learned distinguished professor. A memorial service is set for Tuesday at Plymouth Congregational Church. private funeral services were held today. A university endowment funds loans for engineering students in his memory.

Cong Takes U S Troops In Crossfire In Viet Nam Fight

Supreme Court to Review NAACP Picketing Damage Award

The Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments on whether the NAACP and Savannah branch can be held liable for acts of picketers not under their knowledge or control. An $85,793 award went to Haldred Overstreet, alleging conspiracy to destroy his business by picketing after a dispute with a 14 year old employee. Peace Corps Seeks Volunteers for New Math and Science Teaching in India

Clark Coan says the Peace Corps needs math and science graduates by Jan 1 to start 12 weeks of training at Wisconsin University on Feb 28. Volunteers likely go to Gujarat to teach secondary schools using NSF recommended methods and may help teach English as part of a two year assignment.

Lawrence High School Fu ture Farmers of America public speaking team finished second at the East Central Kansas Public Speaking Contest held Saturday at Shawnee Heights High School in Tecumseh. Council Grove won. Individual placings include Joe Anderson fifth in 6 to 8 minute speech, Jim Baldwin fourth, Dale Nottingham sixth, Steve Rice fifth, with Rice attending West Junior High and Mike Flory also competing.

Kansas University Senior Receives Rotary Fellowship

Brian Lewis Biles of Hutchinson, a KU senior majoring in political science and chemistry, received a Rotary International fellowship for 1966 67 to study in Great Britain. The $2000 award comes from Rotary District 569 upon Hutchinson club nomination. He plans to study at London University or Edinburgh University and aims for medical school.

Two Debate Tourneys By LHS Over the Weekend

Lawrence High School students competed in two debate tournaments over the weekend. At Junction City Friday and Saturday Jim Collinson and Steve Thurston led with five wins and one loss but missed the quarter finals by one speaker point. Jim Kotas and Dan Paretsky posted 4 wins and 2 losses. Bitsy Dellwig and Susy Hatfield each went 3 and 3. At Abilene Friday and Saturday Jeanne Elliott and Nancy Taylor went 4 and 1, while Miles Zimmerman and Wood Merrill finished 3 and 2.
