Lawrence garden tomato matches Big Boy variety

Lawrence resident Heard in Lawrence A H Standfield reports a tomato in his garden weighing 2 1/2 pounds from a vine 8 to 10 feet tall. Sunday Arrest Clears Four Burglaries in Lawrence Area

Lawrence police arrested a 14 year old Sunday at 3045 Stevens Dr resolving two weeks of crime. Chief Troelstrup credited citizen tips and noted 14 burglaries cleared with two juveniles linked to earlier cases. A separate APCO Service Station entry reported with no loss.

New $200000 ATO Addition Locks KU Fraternity Expansion

The Alpha Tau Omega house at 1537 Tenn. St. will finish by Sept. 7 and house 30 members with a dining room and other facilities. Rush activities begin Sept. 8 with 95 members living in the expanded home, making ATO KU’s largest fraternity.

Local Guard Unit Returns After Successful Camp

The Lawrence National Guard unit from Kansas 69th Infantry Brigade came home Sunday after a two week drill at Camp Ripley Minnesota. About 2400 officers and men trained with Kansas and Missouri units in bivouac tactical exercises and heavy artillery firing. First Lt. Stanley L. Larson of Lawrence High School leads the local reconnaissance mortar and anti tank platoon.

McCollum Hall Dedicated For 1903 Graduates Elmer and Burton McCollum

The university plans additional housing while dedicating McCollum Hall on October 17 in honor of Elmer Y. McCollum, discoverer of vitamins A and D, and Burton McCollum, oilfield research pioneer. Both were graduates of 1903.

Two Car Crash Causes 425 Dollar Damage at Local Intersections

Thousands Reported Held in Castro Threat

The Students Revolutionary Directorate claims more than 10,000 Cubans were arrested after an attempted assassination of Fidel Castro. They say the prime minister narrowly escaped death returning to Havana from a Santa Clara rally on July 27, with many anti-Castroists executed by firing squads following the attack.

Turnpike Wrecks Injure 2 Persons

Two people were injured in Kansas Turnpike accidents near Lawrence. Lyle E. Alderson, 51, from Clay Center, was hospitalized with head lacerations after a 1965 Ford truck lost control on the service area ramp. Westbound the truck rolled, no condition reported. F J Schaller Jr., 20, of Ft. Riley, suffered wounds and bruises after a 1957 Rambler left the road and landed in a drainage ditch 11 miles west of Lawrence. he was taken to Forbes Air Base Hospital. Damages were modest in both cases.

Dove hunting season opens with improved prospects
