Augusto B. Leguia the former president of Peru, 47, was moved from his sick bed to a prison cell on San Lorenzo Isle Callao Harbor to await trial for alleged dictatorship misdeeds. His son Juan also jailed, both under guard.
Lima Aug 30 AP The new Peruvian government after a year of dictatorship suspends articles 24 and 31 of the constitution to curb misuse of national funds by Leguia officials. The junta appoints naval and government officials, redefines ministries, and reactivates a law banning alcohol sales on weekends, while reorganizing Lima and Callao administrations.
Reports from multiple nations show violence and political upheaval. In Peru a deposed government continues with military precautions as new leadership forms. A. P. notes court martial for a U S officer backing the uprising. In Rio Grande do Sul rumors of revolt are denied. In Cuba investigators probe a suspected post siege plot with twenty arrests.
A large wooden building housing the Federal Trade Commission burned in Washington on August 30. Firefighters evacuated workers and battled the blaze as flames leapt from the roof. Dozens of filing cases and records from the commission and the Labor Department were destroyed, with twenty firefighters hospitalized and two seriously hurt. Firefighters later said the fire was under control.
In Philadelphia Aug 30 the Phillies defeated the Boston Braves 5 to 4 to end the series. Frankhouse Brandt and Spohrer powered the Phillies with Collins and Bensa, while Boston’s lineup struggled as their pitchers yielded 12 hits.
Major John A. MacReady of San Francisco a famed Dayton altitude flier was seriously injured when his Keith racing ship crashed during a national air races event near Number 3 Pylon at Curtiss-Reynolds Airport Chicago witnesses said he regained control briefly after losing attitude and was taken to Evanston hospital with facial cuts bruises and possible internal injuries.
Captain Wolfgang Von Gronau and three German aviators flew the Dornier Whale over Curtiss Reynolds Airport in Chicago as honored guests at the national air races. An escort of army planes met them, the flyer circled the airport, then headed to Great Lakes naval station. A five minute flight over the grandstands featured a salute with aerial bombs.
Kansas City reports that P. Connor, a long time federal weather observer, will retire Monday under the age limit rule after fifty two years in government service. Andrew M. Hamrick of Davenport, Ta., is named to succeed him.
F T Faxon 55 vice president of McKesson Faxon drug company died after weeks of illness in Kansas City. Survived by widow three daughters and one son. He was son of the late Frank A Faxon linked to B W Woodward in the Round Corner drug store venture and later formed Woodward Faxon and Company wholesale drug business with James C Horton. Faxon known to Lawrence residents.
Partly cloudy statewide with possible local thundershowers tonight and Sunday. Wichita mainly cloudy, other sections clear, roads good. Douglas County reports good roads with temperatures around 70 at noon today and 83 at 7 p.m. yesterday. Rainfall to 7 a.m. today measured at .02 inch. Advertisement promotes Chevrolet.
The State Department issued a note to Lima seeking data on two American captives in Peru. Acting Secretary Castle dispatched the note as part of efforts to obtain release for Grow and Sutton, both long-time Peruvian contract workers. Sutton, a former chief engineer in irrigation, has links to the Leguia era, while Grow, a retired Navy officer, led Peruvian aeronautics under contract.
Amarillo attorney A. D. Payne who confessed placing an infernal machine in his family car that killed his wife Eva Pate and maimed son June 12, dies in his jail cell by detonation of nitroglycerin. He told inmates he would never go to trial and would end it all to “cheat the electric chair.”
Enrollees arrive in Lawrence for enrollment as Haskell Institute prepares for the fall session starting Wednesday September 3. Principal R E Staley says over one thousand students expected. 450 transcript cards already at his office. Superintendent H B Peakrs on tour of Kickapoo and Pottawatomie Indian reservations. Four trains will carry 900 Indian students from eastern Oklahoma to Chilocco and Haskell Monday and Tuesday, per Indian schools supervisor H C Calhoun.
General Jacob S. Coxey of Massillon Ohio once led the unemployed army to Washington. He toured Kansas after visiting Marysville Blue Rapids Concordia Hanover and Topeka to share his finance reforms. He advocates issuing non interest bearing bonds for local improvements funded by the government.
Census bureau figures from 425 auto finance companies show 61 percent of 1929 passenger cars bought on the instalment plan and under 4 percent repossessed for missed payments. Average deferred payment per car stood at 444.30 dollars. Installment purchases totaled 3,478,373 with 1,820,435 new and the rest second hand.

In Saliia Kansas Rev Verna Winchel a 39 year old United Brethren church minister who left pastorate a year ago to attend college died after five days of illness. Doctors diagnosed the disease yesterday as infantile paralysis.
The corporation commission, after a lengthy hearing, continued its proration order restricting Oklahoma oil production to 550000 barrels daily through October 1.
Mont J Green of Manhattan won the general contract for the Pinckney school with a bid of 72873, the lowest. Basil Green of Lawrence was next at 73435. Graeber Bros. of Lawrence got the plumbing and HVAC bid at 13314, Frank Rahskopf of Lawrence secured wiring at 2740.19, and Arthur Tucker of Topeka had a bid lower than Rahskopf by 46, but Lawrence firm awarded the contracts after board approval. Bids opened last Monday. total of three lowest bids exceeded estimate by 12000. Economies reduced plans by nine changes to bring costs within budget. The board authorized signing the contracts despite a failed restraining order from Lizzie S. Sheldon.
Buenos Aires Aug 30 AP troops reinforced the city with the eighth cavalry regiment arriving with full war equipment. The night gunfire between supporters of President Yrigoyen and opposition demonstrators wounded two. The capital assumed a wartime look with troops stationed near the president’s house Cabildo and Banco de la Nacion, and guards at the post office and surrounding buildings.
Wishkanoe, 25, Indian, residing at Mayetta, was moved from Haskell hospital to Rosedale hospital last night after a collision with a culvert while hiding in a coupe with two companions. He sustained head lacerations and a broken right arm. One companion went to Christ hospital in To Gina, while Wishkanoe was later taken to Lawrence for X rays.
Miniature golf has appeared at Haskell on the fifty foot lot on W T Johnson grounds. A small eight hole course erected by Indian boys has been enjoyed by residents of Haskell since its setup.
A $27,000 bond issue proposal for constructing a city water system was presented yesterday in Tribune Kansas by AP. The plan passed with 188 votes for and 26 against.
Captain Rene Rugnet of the Paris reports a 45 foot wave struck the vessel last Thursday while amidships during a 100 mile per hour gale. Forty passengers were injured, 17 gravely, including a broken shoulder suffered by Mrs. Lillian McAuslan of Seattle. The wave shattered 60 panes on the promenade deck, toppled deck stanchions, and swept down the main companionway, bowling over a party of women passengers.
Labor Day observance in Lawrence features a all day picnic at Brown's Grove with a political program in the afternoon. Morning games precede speeches by Rep. U. S. Guyer and Judge W. H. Carpenter, with county and city offices and KU closed. A basket lunch will be served and local baseball between Holcomb Grove and Lawrence Red Sox follows speaking.
Fargo reporters note a special senate elections committee hearing after subpoenas issued for two private detectives C. C. Albers and R. F. Cash who followed Senator Gerald P. Nye and Illinois operatives. Dale seeks why Nye was shadowed and if any framing was planned. Albers claims biography focus, no derogatory aims. Cash did not appear.

Police Chief W J Cummings announced tagging of cars parked without lights on streets. The program starts Sunday night and offenders will be brought to police court. He said such vehicles menace traffic and hinder street sweeping.
AP reports George Simpson of Ohio State University set a new Canadian record in the 220 yard open, winning with a time of 209 1/10 seconds. Eddie Tolan of Michigan finished second and A J Elliott of New Zealand was third in the national exhibition games at Toronto.
