French hold counterattacks east of Passy while Germans withdraw behind the Somme. Clery Sur Somme captured as Rein court and Le Trangloy reported taken. Miss Charlotte Luckan and Miss Tone Li to visit Judge Fisher in Kansas City.
British forces seized Combles between the Somme and Bapaume as Haig reports gains east of the Somme river. French units under Mangin press the German line north of the Ailette while repelling counterattacks near Passy and Soissons.

Lawrence readers will face higher prices as the Journal-World announces new subscription rates. The weekly price rises to thirteen cents for a single week or 12 1/2 cents per week for two or more weeks, with a four week period at twenty five cents.

The Class of 1918, fifty men, depart Friday September 6 for Camp Funston with five extra service members to join Fort Riley duty. Five colored men and three other volunteers will leave Sunday and Wednesday respectively, aided by the Chamber of Commerce for a proper send-off.
About 75 Indians from Oklahoma agency schools arrived at Haskell Institute with more expected. By term start September 1 enrollment could reach around 900 to 1000 Indians, while 175 students worked on farms this summer. An Army training corps unit may be formed and uniforms planned, pending war department approval.

If needed, special assessments may be levied but any surplus after the war will be returned to members. New joiners receive the same exceptional low rate. premiums already paid for war rates will be credited or refunded. The decision required repeal of a constitution clause restricting military service, now suspended as long as needed.
Local millers report no flour in shorts as food administrator oversees milling. Clar ence Hall investigates and finds no hour and shorts ground now equal in nutrition to bran. White shorts have appeared in the market for months.
Captain Paul A. Dinsmoore announces sixteen men from Lawrence National Guard units and Lawrence Club will form a rifle team to train one week in rifle instruction before sailing to Camp Perry. The squad includes Samuel McKone and others from Manhattan Leavenworth Burlingame Chanute Council Grove Liberal and Topeka with Earl Cole of Manhattan commanding the small arms unit.
The last of the 1917 draft class, twenty-one men, left for Camp Funston in the first public Army Training appearance at the University. A 24 piece band led the parade down Massachusetts street as the G A R city and county officials, Chamber of Commerce, and citizens contributed fruit bags to the departing men. Sheriff Woodward announced the departure occurred due to officer absence, with the group escorted from the courthouse to the Union Pacific station.
