Allied forces report a five mile advance along the front extending from Albert to Noyon in a today’s drive. German efforts to hold possession of Noyon are described as bitterly contested as the battle continues.
French forces press the retreating German army across roads toward La Fere and St. Quentin with rear guard actions using machine guns. Morlincourt fell to French troops this morning as German efforts to stem the advance and save Von Hutten’s army suffer heavy strain from Humbert’s western pressure.
French troops under General Humbert seize Noyon after Roye and Chaussees fell, with Morlincourt captured on the Oise east of Noyon. British actions north of the Somme show progress, while German rear guards retreat toward St Quentin and the Hindenburg line amid gas-filled ruins at Ham and Breuil.
The United States Nurse Reserve campaign persists despite the Stubbs Building station closure. Mrs. C. E. Friend will enroll applicants at 1646 Massachusetts Street, with thirty to fifty women volunteering in Lawrence. Enrollment cards are available though blanks remain, and names will be announced when possible.
Dispatches report Franco American attacks near Rouvigny north of Soissons making solid gains. British troops push toward the Brocourt Queant line with towns Ginchy Belloycourt Assevillers Herbycourt Fenillers near Peronne captured. Rygush launch local attacks along multiple sectors as conflict continues.
Plans for the 1917 state convention include a banquet at Haskell Institute for 300 guests prepared by the home economics department. A parade, sight seeing tour, and practical demonstrations are scheduled. Premiums from last fall will be paid with funds from the Woodland Park sale as fair preparations continue.
A meeting of the local carpenters and joiners is called for Friday night at Union Hall. W D Mitchler, general organizer of the Carpenters and Joiners Union, will be present and speak. Members are urged to attend and join in discussion of the current situation and future plans.
Rock Island lines unveil a new Lawrence timetable with twelve daily trains six east six west. Through Pullman service will reach Chicago St Louis east and Wichita Hutchinson Oklahoma City and Texas west. Passengers at Lawrence limited to points east of Kansas City or west of Topeka as per federal board.
Corporal EB L Dunkle of the 27th Burial Squadron writes from France that he is well and cheerful. He describes confidence in safety, asks no tears, and notes the honor of serving in the cause. He enlisted March 6, is twenty, and served as a chauffeur. he is nephew of William T How ard of 468 Lincoln Street.
Weather column notes that bonds for matrimony resemble Liberty bonds, generally fall short and warmer in the north and eastern portions tonight. Temperatures show 3 p.m. yesterday and 8 a.m. today with an outlook for 3 p.m. today.
A second service member from Lawrence, William Edwin Courtney, 21, of 17 West Fourteenth street, died of diphtheria in a French hospital on June 11. He belonged to Headquarters Company, 137th Infantry, 35th Division. The family received notice after a prior letter from Howward Reedy, with no reply from officers yet. Courtney enlisted August 5, 1917, left for Camp Doniphan September 30, 1917, and sailed for overseas April 24, 1918. He was a University of Kansas sophomore, engaged to Dorothy Querfeld, with a Baptist faith noted. He has a sister at KU and two sisters married, with relatives in Kansas.
In police court this morning two local plumbers F. H. Bennett and C. C. Coleem ar were fined four dollars plus costs totaling 5.59 for working without required licenses. Complaints by city building inspector A. E. Blair. Coleman paid and was dismissed while Bennett was given until Tuesday night to pay. The state law requires a $25 annual license fee and a $2,000 bond ensuring work is serviceable and safe.
The Chamber of Commerce will not hold its usual draft contingent luncheon tomorrow at 11 o clock. Instead the chamber will give the draftees a box of fruit to start them toward Camp Funston. Some men in the draft contingent are farmers who cannot leave work for a luncheon.
Douglas county threshing season will last until October 1 according to county agent Fred T Rees. He is receiving reports constantly and cannot release final crop statistics yet. Farmers in the southern part of the county will be busy until late this month and a complete report will be unavailable until then.
A. M. Simons, head of the American socialist mission to Europe, says workers see peace through negotiation as impossible after recent offensives. He reports morale has strengthened for continued war to a decisive victory. Also notes socialists dismiss talks with German counterparts and mentions several local social news and travel.
Paris, Aug 29. French troops occupy Noyon as allies regain over two thirds of ground lost since the German offensive began in March. Marshall Foch's strategy unfolds with Mangin near Juvigny and Chavigny on the right, while the German 7th army clings to the Vesle line. German prisoners are few due to cautious French advance, though mines and traps slow progress.
Lieutenant Floyd E. Welch, a former University man and Kanza fraternity member, took a prominent role with the flying circus in Kansas City. He was a noted half and quarter mile runner on campus and later joined the aerial showcase in a serial scramble. The report also mentions a Farmers Picnic in Lawrence with Red Cross benefit and twilight league plans.
