At noon today allied forces under French and American command pressed the southern end of a salient. German troops made heavy sacrifices to slow the advance as they fought to stop the northward push near the town.
Allied forces push in the Lys salient capturing Kemmel Mont St Quentin and La Couture as British and American troops advance near Peronne and Clery. Haig reports gains across the Somme front with near hours steady pressure and limited hard fighting north of Soissons as Germans retreat.
Labor Day is recognized as a holiday with thanks for toil across soldiers sailors farmers and workers. War reports from France note British success near Lys prompting German retreat and American advances near Soissons with Allied positions improving along the Chemin-Des Dames. Six Kansans are commissioned as second lieutenants at Camp Dodge Iowa.
W J McAdoo has stopped work on four grade crossings in Grant township until permission is obtained. County attorney J B Wilson has taken up the matter with McAdoo and it is now in his hands for settlement. The order blocks road or other work by municipalities or counties with railroads when the railroad would spend more than 500 dollars. County plans have been under way to estimate costs for the crossings. Mrs J B Baughen and son Milliard Neal depart for Los Angeles to visit friends and relatives.
In May the city flags postponement of new street car fare increases as President Emman and the official commission consider the recommendation from the board.
Ky Electric Jitts Co manager J Z Skinner says fare increase to seven cents may wait until after the fair. If immediate, two color tickets will be sold four for twenty five cents and five for thirty cents to cut change needs. Conductors will face extra checks but public education prior to launch is planned.
The forecast promises fair and warmer conditions tonight and Sunday. Temperature readings show yesterday at 8 p m and today at 3 p m with rainfall measurements noted.
Lawrence High School will continue offering the three year German course this year. French government advice stresses studying German to understand Germany, urging enrollment while most boys under 18 face draft and will remain in school for the rest of the year.

American troops brigaded with British and French forces are being withdrawn to join Gen Pershing's first field army. Gen March said 1,220,000 had landed in France by Aug 7 with more since. 1,500,000 embarked overall. He noted 1,300 De Havilland planes completed and 565 shipped or en route. Also, Social Service League to hold monthly meeting Monday at 3 PM at Social Service Hall.
President Wilson signs the man power bill extending the draft ages to 18 45 and calls on 13 million men to enroll on September 12. Registration hours span 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. with provisions for tardy enrollments by mail and local board arrangements nationwide.
Theodore and Bill Charlton, sons of E J Charlton, have each been made sergeants within a week of reaching camp, entering service a month ago. Bill previously served as a sergeant in the local National Guard unit.
Publishers across the region raise subscriptions effective September joining wartime cost pressures. The Journal World and others move to new weekly rates with single copies at three cents and bulk sales at two cents each. Also notes small fire at 774 North Second Street from a coal oil stove and local visits, military service looming for a K U graduate.
Major Scher reports that fit male students eighteen to twenty-five who enroll at the University of Kansas this fall will be inducted into the regular army. They will be uniformed fed and housed at government expense, receive 31 000 a year, and tuition paid, with housing and barracks decisions forthcoming. Students will be subject to US Army rules and training, divided into classes for officers camps or privates, creating a strong military pathway on campus.
Dean Shaad and Dean F J Kelley may attend a conference at Fort Shei Chicago to study housing options for students. The university plans to house and feed male students, considering dorms or barracks due to limited room, with construction to start in about sixty days and school reopening in two weeks.
