New Junta Takes Charge of Peru
Lima reports a new military government under Lieutenant Colonel Luis M. Sanchez Cerro, sworn in to oust Augusto Leguia and General Ponce. Sanchez Cerro arrived from Arequipa amid ovations, thanked the people, and vowed to have fulfilled his duty by revolting. Leguia, ill aboard the Almirante, reportedly ordered forces to Panama, causing questions about navy loyalties. Sanchez Cerro is 41 and once served with the Spanish Foreign Legion in Morocco.
