Lawrence faces a declining elm population from 18,000 mature trees in 1963 to about 12,000 now with losses continuing at around 500 annually. City officials cite funding limits for removal and private owner responsibility while debating spraying options and focusing on protecting remaining public elms to prevent near extinction.
Pittsburgh AP reports a small group of demonstrators demanding more jobs for Negroes in construction forced into U S Steel headquarters and secured a meeting with executives. They refused to halt the 65 story tower nearby, chanting as about 500 demonstrators marched.
Vandals believed to be about 18 years old damaged Marvin Kasson’s melon patch six miles northwest of Lawrence. About 70 watermelons were broken or left to rot, several cantaloupes taken, vines stepped on, and melons smashed along the road as they fled after a watermelon fight. Over $100 in damage reported.
NORAD says lights over Western skies Tuesday night came from a burning Soviet rocket body used to launch Cosmos 294 on Aug. 19. Observers reported cherry red, meteorlike lights over California Nevada and Arizona. any debris would likely fall into the Pacific about 600 miles off Mexico.
Delbert Lloyd Black, 19, of 760 Lyon Street, bound over to the November term of the Douglas County District Court on forgery charges after a County Court hearing. He remains jailed in lieu of a 1500 bond for attempting to cash a 35 check at University State Bank drawn on Lawrence National Bank bearing the name Harry Courtney. He was found guilty of joyriding, a misdemeanor, and sentenced by Judge Charles Rankin to six months in county jail, with an appeal filed to the District Court.
Kansas traffic death log shows 2 deaths in 24 hours to 9 am Wednesday, 69 in August, 470 in 1969, with comparisons to 1968 period. Data reflects AP report from Topeka on state traffic fatalities.
Police report eight Tuesday accidents across the area amid weed overgrowth. Annie Hess 47 of Eudora and David Tuggle 19 of Eudora collided on east Fifth Street when weed visibility was blocked, with $1650 total vehicle damage. Isaac Dirks 77 of Lawrence complained of minor injuries after a rear collision on Sixth Street involving a Flowers truck.
Lawrence Highs counselor Max Stalcup says most students barred for hair length last week have cut hair and enrolled, exact figures unavailable. Lt. Topeka and Lawrence ad valorem taxes head into new year with small declines and record high levies. Topeka total 135.918 mills down from 141.036, while Lawrence base levy rises to 103.45 mills, up from 101.42. A mill equals $1 per $1,000 valuation.
A six foot marijuana plant was found growing near Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego. Police cut it down and said they do not know who planted the illicit plant.
In Forrest City Arkansas a white mob ranging from 200 to 1000 attacked bystanders injuring three and burning two cars. National Guard units were placed on alert though not deployed as Governor Rockefeller aides said authorities kept a close watch. A black militant from Memphis named Lance Willie Watson was among the injured and two newsmen were assaulted. Police reported the riot began with a downtown march and clashes with Black residents while protesters later gathered at City Hall and the Police Department demanding strict law enforcement.
Douglas County collects 669.50 for Hurricane Camille relief surpassing 117.50 yesterday with 68 donated in person and 484 by mail. Director Jo Byers notes the county quota is 3215 and United Fund chair William Eddy pledged full support and potential surplus from 1968 would have gone to Red Cross.
School District 497 outlines partial bus service for the opening two half days. Rural elementary riders include Deerfield Schwegler Kaw Valley India and Broken Arrow. Cordley serves special education. Junior high riders include North Lawrence South Junior High and Kasold Drive 23rd Street Haskell Road areas. Rural Lawrence High will ride in the morning only. no afternoon service. Regular service resumes Tuesday. Over 1,200 students expected to ride. Lt. Eugene Shurtz Jr. 26 of Davenport Iowa is relieved as commander of Alpha Company 196th Light Infantry Brigade after his men refused a Sunday advance on Nui Lon Mountain. Capt. Bernard Wolpers replaces him. battalion commander Lt. Col. Robert C. Bacon cited unsatisfactory progress. Major Richard Waite and Sgt. Okey Blankenship helped rally troops.
Kansas needs 12,000 new jobs annually to match population growth, Kansas Department of Economic Development Director Jack Lacy said at a private enterprise forum in Junction City. He cited a goal of 15,000 to 20,000 manufacturing jobs for diversification, noting Kansas has met 12,000 yearly in recent years if private industry reaches $252 million.
The Bureau of Land Management will use a television camera to aid fire watch in foothills north of Boise Idaho. Idaho BLM director Joe Fallini said the camera is installed atop the 13 story Bank of Idaho building in downtown Boise to focus on the foothill area.
