Nixon administration warns against expectations of a postwar windfall for domestic programs. Tropical storm Eve strengthens off the Florida coast toward hurricane intensity as repair work and body searches continue from Camille. Forecasters predict further growth to near hurricane status while alerts extend along the mid Atlantic and Bermuda. In Mississippi and Louisiana, victims receive aid as Virginia flood toll and damages rise with relief efforts expanding in Biloxi Gulfport Long Beach and Pass Christian.
Douglas County Red Cross director Jo Byers announced the hurricane Camille relief quota was raised to 3215 dollars, but only 117.50 has been received so far. Rehabilitation costs were revised from 6 million to 15 million, and in-kind donations are not currently needed. Funds are being solicited by a selective mail campaign with door-to-door plans possible if targets are not met.
Lawrence soldiers in Vietnam suffered both injury and fatality in the same action south of Da Nang. Pfc Ronald E. Webb 20 previously of 11 Roanoke and Pfc Timothy Allen Mohler 20 of 445 Lyons St died or were wounded during a rocket attack while serving with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. Webb entered the Army in February and arrived in Vietnam July 7 while Mohler’s parents Rev and Mrs Loren Mohler were notified of his death August 19. Webb is a 1967 Lawrence High graduate who worked in the Journal-World composing room before service.
The board discussed code violations and penalties for students including profanity theft extortion and bringing disruptive items to school. Decisions on suspensions for fights were debated with principals favoring cooling off periods and parental involvement. Staff will post city trespassing rules to curb disruptions from non students and outsiders.
State authorities warn the illegal harvest of Kansas marijuana draws youths from 13 states to the fields. Police report 69 arrests since July 1, with most suspects in their late teens or early 20s. Kansas weed is described as low quality but still pursued for personal use and potential illicit markets.
