KU Union Entrance Faces Facelift With Canopies

Kansas Union on the Lawrence campus begins a second phase of a three part renovation to its south entrance. contractor B A Green Construction Co. aims for Oct 1 completion with a redwood deck and benches. Canopies will extend from the north entry to the sidewalk, offering shelter and a bulletin board.

City Denies East Lawrence Rezoning Request

Lawrence city commissioners denied a rezoning request for a 13.9 acre tract south of East 19th Street and west of a Santa Fe spur, keeping M-1 industrial zoning despite neighbors urging downzoning to residential. The action followed a noon planning commission meeting and earlier discussion about traffic and subdivision legality.

Cycle mishaps injure three in Lawrence

Three persons were injured in motorcycle accidents Tuesday in Lawrence. Fred Coffelt, 17, sustained leg and hand injuries when his cycle collided with a car driven by James Hopper. Holly Payne and Jeremiah Payne, 20 and 14 months, had minor injuries near West 23rd and Ousdahl. Thomas Payne, 21, was cited for careless driving and expired registration. Reusch’s car sustained minor damage.

Lawrence Airport bid opening for expansion project scheduled

City commissioners set 2 p.m. September 16 for opening bids to upgrade Lawrence Municipal Airport funded largely by a 540000 FAA grant covering 90 percent of an estimated 600000 stage. The total project value reaches 755000 with city and chamber contributions.

GM hikes prices on 1978 models across lineup

General Motors announced an average price rise of 405 per vehicle for 1978 models, about 5.7 percent including options, with base prices up 4.6 percent. Shipping adds 18, pushing the total per-vehicle increase. Cadillac, Chevrolet Chevette, and new midrange models await late September to October price disclosures. Kan sas University out-of-state fees corrected

The fall semester charge for out-of-state residents at Kan sas University totals 839.40 dollars including the 89.40 campus privilege fee. An earlier Journal-World Kansas University Edition report incorrectly stated the out-of-state fee did not include the campus privilege fee.

The city urges out of town Kansas University football fans to avoid the Massachusetts Street bridge during fall Saturdays. Heavy construction for two new Kansas River bridges will make the route to the stadium difficult. Travelers are advised to use the west turnpike exit.
