KU to cut Audio Reader funding as university reduces budget
KU plans 50 percent funding cuts for 2020 and 2021 with total EU funding ending by 2022. In May the Lawrence campus announced $20 million in cuts to address rising costs and waning state support. Audio Reader will lose funding in three years but will retain in kind support for the 1920s Tudor building at 1120 W 11th St and building maintenance. The program relies on 400+ volunteers and free services for blind and visually impaired readers across Kansas and western Missouri, with further fundraising to offset losses through events like For Your Ears Only and a Douglas County fairground sale.
