Front line dispatches report three North Korean divisions pushing to within 15 miles of Taegu, with 60,000 troops gathered for a major offensive. Marines and U S forces counterattacked near Changnyong bridgehead as casualties rose and prisoners were found executed. MacArthur HQ awaited results of the B 29 saturation raid west of the Naktong.
Washington Aug 17 committees from the Senate and House endorsed bills to provide 85 to 125 dollars monthly to families of enlisted servicemen in the three lowest Army grades and similar in other services. A dependent wife and child would total 110 dollars, wife plus two children 125. Details differ but follow the same plan.
Blazing through its second day, a massive mountain fire in San Diego county’s Cleveland National Forest has scorched about 12,000 acres near the El Capitan Reservoir NE of the city. Forest Service official Roy H. Blood warns the heavy timber loss threatens vital watershed water supplies in the county.
Bobby Richards, a top young golfer from Lawrence, defeated Don Bisplinghoff of Orlando 1 up in 20 holes to reach the fourth round of the Junior tournament at Ames Iowa. He will face Roger Dunn in the next round.

Washington Aug 17, 729 The trainmen and conductors unions announced strikes on two short line railroads starting next Tuesday and ending Aug 26 at midnight. The Elgin Joliet and Eastern and the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie will be affected with 5,000 workers directly involved and up to 40,000 idle indirectly. Similar five day walkouts were ordered yesterday at three strategic terminals Kentucky and Indiana Terminal Louisville Minnesota Transfer St Paul River Terminal Cleveland. The unions are engaged in a wage dispute with national railroads.
Washington August 17 John Foster Dulles said President Truman has asked him to be a delegate to the United Nations general assembly and he will not seek the Senate seat in New York After a talk with the President Dulles read reporters a brief statement accepting the U N appointment and said he will remain as Republican foreign policy consultant to Secretary of State Acheson
Firefighters doused a blaze in a barn loft at 705 East Nineteenth Street this afternoon about 1 45. Fire Chief Paul Ingels said a boy accidentally dropped a lit match in the hay starting the fire. Damage described as slight.
In Lake Success on August 17 the United States urged UN members to speed up sending ground troops to the Korean battle area. The second MacArthur command report to the Security Council covers operations through July 31 and emphasizes using existing units over creating new ones. Warren R. Austin urged rapid despatch of organizations already in being to bring a quick, successful conclusion. The report notes propaganda and disunity in Korea and cites leaflets and radio broadcasts as countermeasures.
Topeka August 17 Gov Frank Carlson said he will appoint a director to head the reactivated civilian defense council as Kansas awaits the federal outline expected by September 8 The state discussed orderly organization training of volunteers information dissemination and alert methods and suggested broadening the council to include Red Cross and American Legion leadership driving civilian readiness across Kansas.
The United Nations Security Council failed to break its deadlock at a closed door session on inviting Korean representatives to participate in debates. The 90 minute meeting was convened by Russia's Jakob A Malik, August president of the 11 nation council, and delegates returned to a public meeting to continue statements on Korea.
AP reports in Korea at a glance that on the central front 30,000 reds attack from a mountain pass 15 miles north of Taegu while US Marines and 24th Infantry strike 12,000 communists on the Naktong east bank near Changnyong. The southern front sees the 25th Infantry poised to confront reds in Magan, armor units noted. The North Korean 6th division is described as badly battered, while the north coast area remains relatively quiet except for limited SK attacks near Yongdok and a clinging U S airstrip southeast of Pohang.
Douglas county 4 H clubs selected demonstrations in Baldwin and Lawrence for the Topeka Fair. Home improvement winners were Carolyn Husted and Yvonne Robb, both of Jayhawk. Foods winners were Irene Sample and Charlotte Longanecker of Meadowlark. Clothing winners were Lorna Craig and Martha Stevens of Vinland Valley. County judging featured blue and red ribbons for several clubs with Miss Quigley coordinating contests.

Showers to end soon, skies partly cloudy tonight, fair weather expected Friday with peak readings near 80. Temperatures cooled about ten degrees. lows 50 to 65 ranged across regions. rainfall totals listed include El Dorado 1.75 and Wichita 1.15 inches.
President Truman denounced a Senate Republican claim that American war dead in Korea are to blame on Secretary of State Acheson as contemptible and beneath comment. The remark by Senator Wherry drew sharp rebuke from the White House in Washington.
Kansas university crews press ahead with a summer remodeling program by the buildings and grounds department. More than 15 major projects aim for completion before fall term, with the registrar’s office and the women’s lounge among the busiest sites as Fraser hall Hoch auditorium and the University high faculty club renovation move toward completion.

The Halifax Chronicle-Herald reports naval officials in Halifax say they are keeping a close watch on a foreign destroyer sighted off Halifax. Officials state they have nothing to issue on the report. Naval planes reportedly flew over the area to investigate the sighting.
Aug 17 witness opposed a proposal letting the interior department run offshore oil operations while a state federal dispute over tide lands ownership is settled. The testimony reflected strong preference for state control and highlighted legal questions surrounding jurisdiction and resource rights.

The Sixth Annual Lawrence Horse Show at Haskell Institute August 25–27 will crown a queen via a three night point system judged anew each night. The winner becomes Lawrence’s Royal Queen entrant for the Kansas City American Royal in October.
The Douglas County selective service office has dispatched pre induction exam notices to 26 men aged 22 to 26 who will report to Kansas City for mental and physical evaluations. Clerk Mrs. Gertrude Halberg notes the 23 to 25 group is exhausted under current exemptions and deferments. The 26 men meet at the courthouse at 8 am August 28 before departing for the bus station and onward to Kansas City. So far 18 men were sent for exams on August 7, and seven more last week. results have not been received.
U S delegate Warren R Austin appealed to Russia in the United Nations Security Council to call off communist North Korean forces and show through actions that its stated peace aims are genuine. The appeal followed a closed session where the council again failed to break a procedural deadlock over Korea.
A grand jury indicted Ana Tolii Yakovlev former Russian vice consul in New York on espionage conspiracy charges. Yakovlev, believed to be in Russia, is named alongside Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. No further details available.
Clarence G. Munns of Topeka was elected president of the University of Kansas Memorial Corporation after a special meeting. He will also join the corporation’s board of directors, replacing Irving Hill of Lawrence who resigned.
Kenneth Rose, chair of KU metallurgy, demonstrated crystals of silver copper and tin to Kiwanis members. He noted about 36 of the 72 metals are commercially useful and debunked the idea that crystalization causes metal parts to break, explaining metals are crystalline except when molten and that fracture surfaces show crystals that held together.
Washington reports the army will not require sole surviving sons of families who lost service members in World War II to serve in Korea. Those currently in Korea may apply for a transfer to non combat areas, and applications may be started by family members.
