Topeka August 19 PI orders have been issued for an undisclosed number of organized Army reservists in Kansas to report by August 23 for physical examinations in preparation for active duty Col C C Higgins Kansas Military District said. Orders were sent to officers and enlisted reservists not assigned to a unit and those ordered to Fort Riley who pass will be ordered to active duty. Most will be allowed to prepare for entry in but time will be shorter for some with critically needed special skills.

Hurricane bears down near Atlantic as freighter battles fire
A hurricane near Brunswick Georgia moved toward the Carolina coast as a 7,247 ton freighter the Russell R. Jones, battered by 140 mph winds and fire in forward holds, was escorted to safety by coast guard cutters near Wilmington. Navy ship Kleinsmith aided the stricken vessel after a perilous mercy run. Nearly 4 000 people attended the opening night of the 46th annual Eudora CPA picnic at the city park. Tonight's forecasted turnout nears 3 000 if weather stays clear as former residents travel in.
