West Berliners clashed with East German forces at the Brandenburg Gate as authorities blocked entry for refugees. Stones flew, three tear gas bombs were fired by Communists, and gas drift affected both sides. The gate was closed and cross border phone lines cut. East German militia manned the arches with rifles as troops stood behind.
Washington reports an accord to return an Eastern Airlines plane hijacked to Havana. Cuba will receive a Cuban patrol boat in exchange for allowing the American crew to fly the 3.2 million Electra back to the United States. The plan speeds up clearance for travel to Havana amid limited U S Cuban ties.
West Germany said counter measures against the Communist closing of the Berlin border will be more than a written protest. A Foreign Office spokesman refused to reveal details but said actions would match the level of the move.
About 120 militiamen armed with submachine guns formed a semicircle at the gate as roughly 3,000 West Berlin protesters pressed against East German troops inside the barrier. Police managed to push back the crowd amid tense standoff dynamics.
