Washington reports Hopson, longtime head of Associated Gas & Electric, fought the utilities bill amid accusations of prying into private affairs. Senate foes consider contempt action while House investigators press for details on income and profits from the industry.
Washington August 13. Senate finance sub committee announced postponement of the drastic war profits bill until the next session of Congress. The measure drafted by munitions investigators would tax nearly all earnings and place industrial leaders under military jurisdiction. The House had already passed a war profits bill, but the Senate preferred a new approach.
New York relief workers on federal projects faced a strike threat over the security wage of 93.50 a month, but a government report showed only 358 of 77,806 relief jobs on strike. Works Progress Administrator Huth S Johnson warned union leaders he would drop refusers from relief rolls, despite claims by unions seeking to force union-scale pay.
Washington reports Senator Gerry proposes that American athletes seriously consider boycotting the 1936 Berlin Games amid Nazi persecution of Jews and Catholics. He warned that German actions could create bad feeling if Americans compete or win against German entrants.
Pan American Clipper, eight crew and 3000 pounds of cargo, launched from Pearl Harbor in calm conditions. After a first takeoff failed to lift, a second attempt succeeded and the plane headed west toward Midway Island, expected to complete the 1323 mile journey in about nine hours. Captain R C D Sullivan reported clear weather and a steady speed near 150 miles per hour.
An electrical transformer under a sidewalk at the Washington Post building exploded, shattering first floor windows and throwing a glass sidewalk section onto a passerby. One woman was taken to a hospital and another cut by flying glass. Damage is described as negligible while smoke lingered in the basement. Government workers nearby blocked streets as the scene unfolded.
Scouts on the Pony Express trail from Sacramento to St Joseph are due to arrive at Fort Bridger Wyoming late today. They carry special letters from state governors along the route to President Roosevelt as part of the diamond jubilee celebration.
Washington August 18 The finance committee's tax bill was taken up by the senate but opening debate was deferred until tomorrow The measure reduces new taxes on individuals while prompting higher levies on income over 1 000 000 gifts estates and intercorporate dividends The bill would raise about 250 million with a capital stock levy and graduated corporate rates.
Washington reports seigniorage from issuing currency and regulating value has topped 3.0 billion in the past 18 months. About 2.8 billion came from gold revaluation, nearly 150 million from silver certificate margins, and about 70 million in other seigniorage since June 1934. Demand for small coins boosted mint profits above costs of metals.
Senator Connally of Texas today introduced a three point substitute for a Thomas oil regulation bill. The measure allows ratification of the Dallas interstate compact for oil and gas conservation and gives authority to the president and tariff commission to limit.
Former Senator James A. Reed of Missouri predicted that a strong Republican platform and candidate could defeat Roosevelt in 1936 while noting Democrats should nominate a conservative option. He cited opposition to the new deal and mentioned possible Republican or conservative Democrat nominees Alfred E. Smith Harry F. Byrd and Albert C. Ritchie. Reed said he may play a role but has no plans for public office.
Washington August 13 A possible contempt citation hangs over H C Hopson of the Associated Gas and Electric System after a senate lobby committee agent was blocked from serving a subpoena. McCarthy testified he was jostled while Hopson’s associates blocked service and Hopson denied accepting the paper, with Hopson’s attorney arguing a house subpoena already covers him. The committee met in secret to decide its next move as a Capitol policeman testified about interference and the service attempt.
Washington August 12 Roosevelt and Hoover revealed as fellow stamp collectors at the American Philatelic Society golden jubilee. Roosevelt sent a welcome message while Hoover sought membership in the national society and Washington group. Ickes and Klein named president after a mail ballot.
UK plans to submit to the federal reclamation administration a 7 million dollar flood control project to reclaim 90 000 acres along Verdigris river bottom land including a dam on the Caney river near Verdigris. Dike failure at Grada results in at least 100 deaths and widespread destruction.
About 250 relief workers camped on Saline county courthouse lawn pressing three demands: $3 weekly grocery orders per family, 25 pounds of ice, and a quart of milk daily for each family with children, plus eviction protection until the new WPA operates. Commissioners allowed ice and milk. county attorney sought extra funds from Topeka.
Mandeville W Zenge a 26 year old Missouri carpenter pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with murder by mutilation of his love rival Dr Walter J Bauer of Kirksville Mo Bauer who had married Zenges former fiancee was kidnapped from Ann Arbor and brought to Chicago for the operation The trial was set for September 9 without subpoenas but Zenges attorney said more time was needed to gather witnesses from Missouri
Washington Aug 13 UPI President Roosevelt plans to sign the Social Security bill tomorrow or Friday after discussing the legislation with Secretary Perkins. Perkins said the three member board to administer the act should be appointed promptly. Fire Destroyed Farm Home in Smith Center Kan Aug 13 UP reports a fire of undetermined origin today razed Arden Dierdorff’s farm home causing about $2000 damage.
Detroit second baseman Charlie Gehringer was forced out of today's game with Washington due to a knee injury from Sunday. The ailment sidelined him for the first time in about two years as he steps back from action and Herman Clifton may replace him in the lineup.
A two day conference sponsored by the Office of Indian Affairs opened yesterday at Haskell. Led by A C Monahan, the meeting focuses on organizing civic participation courses for graduate students in Indian schools. Attending are administrators from Flandreau and Fort Wingate schools, Haskell staff, and specialists in home economics and community work.
The Kansas City Chamber aviation committee urges federal study to designate Lawrence Airport as an auxiliary landing field for Kansas City. The plan calls for longer runways and lighting, with Lawrence offering reliable weather and emergency landings when KC port is fogbound.
Detroit reports a recorder's court jury found William Lee Ferris, Florence and Loretta Jackson, and Jean Millergate guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of Howard Carter Dickinson, a New York attorney, with Judge Boyne outlining possible verdicts including first or second degree murder, manslaughter, or acquittal. Also noted, Canada’s wheat carry-over at July 31 stood at 203,281,288 bushels, down from prior years.
British poet William Watson dies in Brighton after a fortnight of illness. He had been a prominent literary figure with ties to Sussex and Ditchling. News notes his passing and the tribute from local circles.
New Orleans jockey H Bagur was ruled off the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club grounds for life after stewards alleged battery concealed in his sleeve to speed his horse Haggerson. Christopher J Fitzgerald Illinois racing commission official said Bagur was caught as horses left the paddock for the second race. Bagur rode Haggerson who finished eleventh in the twelve horse field. he was allowed to race but then ordered to leave the track after weigh-in.
The Douglas County Normal Institute entered its second day with regular classes and a noon get acquainted gathering in the high school gym. Kansas City reports two drowning deaths yesterday. A 15 month old Maxine Kernodle fell into a rear yard pool near Grandview Missouri, despite two hours of resuscitation by her mother nurse Mrs Paul Kernodle. James Leroy Bowling 17 drowned in a small lake at Adair Park after a plank tipped and he sank. Governor Park stayed two executions in Missouri, Roy E Hamilton and Eddie Gayman, two weeks to allow time for pleas for commuting to life terms.
Commissioned officers and members of three Kansas National Guard units in Lawrence complete preparations for departure tomorrow evening to Camp Whitside Ft. Riley for 15 days of intensive field training. Companies H and M of the 137th Infantry plus Troop I Haskell cavalry, with 24 government trucks and 3 station wagons, will transport men and equipment.
