Washington Aug 12 The senate finance committee reversed itself and struck the La Follette amendment lowering exemptions and raising small taxpayer taxes replacing it with higher surtaxes on larger net incomes over 1 000 000 as President suggested. Protests followed with leaders predicting no tax bill if small income taxes remained.
Mrs E H Varnum a Lawrence resident for nearly 30 years died at home 713 Missouri street after a period of invalid life. She came with husband Dr BE H Varnum to Lawrence in 1908. he died in 1930. Survived by son Walter H Varnum and grandsons Walter B and Ralph. Funeral 2:30 Tuesday at Funk chapel with burial in Memorial Park cemetery.
Chicago August 12 CPI Hogs set a new six year high price of 12.15 per hundredweight in late trading on the Chicago livestock market. The price gained 10 cents from Friday. Hogs closed higher across weights with light and medium weight butchers in demand and prices 10 to 25 cents up from Friday.
More than 200 representatives from at least 40 Kansas cities are slated to attend a flood control conference Wednesday in Hutchinson. P Bradley called the meeting at Newt R Graham of Tulsa’s Mississippi Valley Association requested it. A bill in Congress proposes 10 000 600 dollars for Kansas flood control. John A Fox of the association will be the principal speaker.
In New York on August 12 union leaders in building trades urged a strike of skilled workers on federal financed WPA projects to protest the security wage of 93.50 per month. Nonunion unemployed councils offered support as figures of strikers fluctuated.

The Douglas County Normal Institute opens at Lawrence Memorial High School with 85 enrolled, featuring faculty from Lawrence and surrounding towns. Lectures include Miss Marguerite Llewellyn on The New Writing Course and talks on child health, with events by the Douglas County Teachers Association and a Chamber of Commerce dinner at Hotel Eldridge.
Leavenworth Kansas prison authorities verified John Davis thirty, an escaped trusty, had been employed in Iowa harvest fields to send money home to his family in McPherson county. Davis, sentenced January for grand larceny, escaped July first and was arrested near Schailer Iowa. He has sent nearly all earnings to kin and remains in solitary confinement as punishment.
Topeka August 19 WPA administrator Evan Griffith announced a $501000 soil erosion program for Kansas funded by WPA. Three new projects will cover Allen county Elm Creek near Iola. Douglas and Franklin counties west of Ottawa. and Haskell and Seward counties near Liberal. An existing Jewell and Smith counties project continues. Local labor share 90 percent where possible. Projects focus on terracing check-dams diversions and revegetation to demonstrate land protection and erosion control.
Riverside neighbors gathered at his farm to ease his burden by finishing farm work. Half a mile north of Riverside school, George Husted has been bedbound with unimproved condition as practically all local men brought teams and tractors to plow, mow hay, and complete tasks.

Topeka August 12 Dr John R Golden Kansas city leader charged the Roosevelt administration broke its promise to shield dry states from liquor traffic and called repeal a scrap of paper He cited a federal treasury report claiming 7 792 permits to sell liquor were issued in Kansas last year saying the government sanctioned liquor sales in violation of the state constitution.

Boy Scouts of the Kaw Area announce the canceled 10 day Colorado trip planned to attend the Scout Jamboree in Washington D C. Scout executive Paul N Campbell said a majority of local Scouts did not wish to go and he needed at least half of those who had planned to attend the Washington Jamboree.

County commissioners set August 23 for the election of three Douglas County Drainage District No. 1 commissioners. 267 of 407 resident taxpayers signed petitions, meeting legal required support. Election at Woodlawn School from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with named judges and clerks. Objections raised by five residents. after election drainage commissioners will oversee levee work and seek federal aid.
John Emick reported a Sunday robbery at the Douglas County Building and Loan office 737 Massachusetts street. Thieves pried a rear door, took about 195 dollars in cash from the vault, left no tools, carried away the combination, and insurance covers the loss.
Phil Kennamer, convicted slayer of John Gorrell, began flying lessons at a Tulsa airport. Friends say he expects reversal of his conviction and plans to fly professionally after release, with thoughts of travel to South America. Bobby Allen son of Dr and Mrs F C Allen has been awarded one of four Culver Endowment Professional scholarships for next year. The $500 cavalry school scholarship is added to a summer grant this year. He may transfer to Lawrence for the fall term. Dr and Mrs Allen and daughter Eleanor will attend Culver closing exercises August 16 to 20.
