President Ford signed a bill to insure vaccine manufacturers as the U S moves toward a nationwide swine flu immunization program. The plan aims to vaccinate millions, with first doses due by late September and a tentative rollout across the fall season.
Douglas County residents may line up for swine flu inoculations starting October 1 as Kansas health officials anticipate vaccine arrival in mid September. The program targets adults over 18 first with later access for 5 to 18 year olds, and clinics will be set by county health departments and at KU hospital facilities.
Damp conditions return to Lawrence after two storms bring 1.19 inches, .22 inches more by 7 a.m. Today. Power outages affected many homes and trees were felled. Utility managers report restoration by evening rush and forecasts call for more showers but highs near 90 and mostly sunny skies through Monday.
The Douglas County Commission unanimously adopted an 8.94 million dollar 1977 budget at a 10 am hearing with no public comments. Industrial commodities rose 0.7 percent, signaling mixed inflation pressures as consumer prices and unemployment trends influence policy.
Senate candidate Buckley signals possible third man bid as Ford and Reagan struggle over platform. Reagan aides push to break binding primary-delegate rule while Buckley seeks to deadlock the convention on the first ballot. Ford leads with 1,105 delegates. Reagan 1,032. 122 uncommitted.
