Lawrence strengthens links to national conventions as travel simplification brings Kansas City and Lawrence closer. The city hosts Utah’s 20 delegates with 65 rooms at Ramada Inn and camera crews from CBS and NBC for the Republican National Convention at Kemper Arena next week.
A GOP drive to elect a Republican majority and topple Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill used broom imagery for delegates in Kansas City. Fire marshal objections and venue concerns blocked the plan, as organizers pivot to a referendum style campaign with broom pictures for the convention.
Utah Republicans bound for the Republican National Convention will sleep at the Ramada Inn in Lawrence. The host committee plans a single noon luncheon and an information booth to guide delegates to services, with 30 volunteers staffing 8 am to 5 pm. Delegates arrive Sunday and attend a Kansas City reception before the convention opens. Utah has 20 delegates and 20 alternates pledged to Reagan.
Peters Williams and Kubota will draft rough plans and cost estimates for a retirement home in Baldwin within walking distance of downtown. About 30 attendees urged the firm to move forward. Funds will cover postage and box rental as plans proceed.
The Kansas Canvassing Board must meet Tuesday to certify Aug 3 primary results but will adjourn for certification until Aug 24 or 25 after receiving about two thirds of counties canvass books. Wyandotte County had submitted its book by Wednesday.
The survey of the state treasurer's books started Tuesday with seven auditors. State Post Auditor Richard Brown will discuss the full audit with Treasurer Joan Finney and lay out the two month timeline. Brown denies a special audit but says the review will focus on delays in balancing accounts. Finney calls the timing political as she seeks re election.
The Ton ganoxie school board approved its 1976 77 district budget with no public opposition. The $1 226 360 general fund budget will raise the mill levy to 40 584 from 35 401 in 1975. Superintendent Powers highlighted ongoing capital outlay projects and summer renovations, with a full day start Aug 26 and teacher orientation Aug 23. Meyer's Dairy Basehor won a milk bid at 9.5 cents per half pint.
FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley said many agents fear criminal charges or disciplinary action over FBI wrongdoing. He declined to predict outcomes of two Justice Department probes into burglaries linked to political activists and finances in purchasing and funds management.
Baldwin school board approved a 1,596,129 district budget for 1976 77 including a 1 027 462 general fund after a public hearing with no questions. The total rises from 875 749 last year and the levy increases about 2 mills to 55.03 mills. Various bids were awarded for milk propane gas gasol ine tires and termite control. staff changes include resignations and new hires at Baldwin schools.
Fire department history volume 1859 1975 by Phil Leonard went on sale at Lawrence Fire Station One. The 152 page yearbook style book costs 30 dollars for personalized copies. over 100 copies sold before press. Chief Kasberger praised Leonard, who worked about a year with library and city archives help from Jim Lee and Harold Mallonee.
