Champion steer sale at Armerica livestock show sale night

At the Future Farmers of America livestock auction, the grand champion steer owned by Hal Hoffsommer and trained by Scott Hofsommer of Lecompton was bid to high reserve as bidders and spectators watched. The event also listed multiple breed winners including Charolais champion Hal Hoffsommer and crossbred and Hereford divisions, with extensive junior exhibitor awards and Get-of-Lire prize winners noted.

Douglas County Fair Hosts Goat Show Amid Final Fair Day

More than 200 goats are expected at the Douglas County Fairgrounds as the 1976 Douglas County Fair closes on Saturday. The Jordan Singers will perform gospel music after the awards program. Dairy cattle judging concluded, and the FFA livestock auction starts at 7:30 p.m. A pony pull is set for 7 p.m. in the arena.

Three Held After Break-In Probe In Douglas County

A break-in probe led to the arrest of William R. Rayton 19 on burglary theft and battery of a police officer. Harold Rayton Sr. 57 and Harold Rayton Jr. 29 were held for obstructing the legal process and resisting arrest. Police seized stereo equipment valued at 1729 and a fourth man remained at large. Detective Don Dalquest was knocked unconscious but not seriously injured.

Record U S corn crop forecast keeps food price rise seen

Agriculture Department officials maintain their forecast for a 3 to 4 percent rise in retail food prices this year as the August crop production report shows a record 6.19 billion bushels of corn, seven percent above last year. Don Paarlberg notes July conditions worsened in the upper Great Plains and western Corn Belt but crops remain near the prior record. The report projects a 366 million bushel drop from last month’s estimate for all U S crops.

City Auction to Fund Tennis Courts in Oskaloosa

Oskaloosa plans a 1 pm Saturday auction at the town square with Mayor Roger Lemmons stating furniture appliances and hundreds of items will be sold to raise about 20000 for two lighted tennis courts. The sale is sponsored by the city park board and will include an air conditioner filing cabinets typing tables and various tables. Oskaloosa lies 21 miles northwest of Lawrence on U S 59.

Kansas Crop Service predicts large sorghum and wheat yields

The Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service forecast a 195 million bushel sorghum crop for 1976 with 52 bushels per acre on 3.75 million acres. Wheat was raised to 327.45 million bushels on 11.1 million acres, soybeans projected at 19.35 million bushels on 880,000 acres, and sugarbeet and alfalfa outputs noted with no corn change.
