Culling Proves Valuable In New Jersey Poultry Herds
An analysis of culling demonstrations shows 22,542 birds handled with 10,668 discarded as poor layers. Records indicate egg yield losses under 1 percent when 47.5 percent of birds are culled, saving dollars and leaving only top producers. Kansas data cited show improvements from 62 to 126 eggs per hen after selective breeding and culling. Immediate culling advised to free space for growing stock and prepare pullets for winter laying, with careful feeding and housing stability to prevent moults.
